The Rise of an Delicacy
picture from dconheels.com
If you visit any fancy restaurant these days, you'll have a hard time not finding lobster on the menu. The shellfish became an symbol for luxury and wealth in the late 1800s.
What is considered now as rare delicacy from the bottom of the sea used to get called ‘cockroach of the ocean’. In the early 1800s lobsters were sold as ‘poor man’s and prisoners food’.
How did lobster get become famous?
“Railway managers discovered if they billed it as a delicacy, passengers who didn’t know of its disgusting reputation thought it was delicious. As the years went by, lobster started showing up in salad bars, and by the 1920s, it had become the food of choice for the world’s aristocrats. The lobster’s popularity took a dive during the Great Depression, once again becoming a food for the poor, but by the 1950s, it was back in vogue and had become the luxury food we eat today.”

What interesting information, I thought it has always been a luxury
Thanks bro!
WOW! I love lobsters. I guess I guess I have to go back to 1800's to eat lobsters more often. :)
Yes let's go back in time for shellfish!
Poor lobsters :( way to less in the seas, but that count for many maritim creatures, makes me sad :( Funny how food for poor people is switching to food for the rich people. Same with caviar.
Yes, sustainable fishing is important
bring me some cockroach guv!
Hahah sure!
I've never tried lobster before but I really want to since there must be something cool in it. I've read sea food is much more healthy than normal meat so that's a really good reason why to try.I wonder how I am supposed to eat it since the lobsters look massive on the dish.Every single day we find something new.I had no idea that lobsters were out of use in the past.Nowadays almost every good restaurant around the world has it.
