BBQ pulled pork sandwiches. Using fruit instead of pork???

in #food7 years ago

I was finally able to give this BBQ pulled pork sandwich recipe a try. But I didn't use pulled pork. I used something called jackfruit as a substitute. Although it is a fruit, is lends itself well to soak up other flavors, like BBQ sauce. After cooking it for a while, it breaks down into the consistency of pulled pork.

I got the jackfruit in brine from Trader Joes. Most recipes call for water as the liquid, or fresh is best, but this worked out pretty well for the first time.

Just drain and rinse and then spice em' up! For spices I just used some chili powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and a little cayenne pepper. For the slaw I used a shredded cabbage and carrot with the some mayo and mustard and salt and pepper.

I could definitely have shredded the jackfruit up more to get the real shreddyness you get with real pulled pork, but we were hungry and didn't care so we called it good.

The only thing I would have added would have been pickles. It would have been 5 stars for sure with a little bit of pickle acid to cut some of the bbq and slaw. But it was good enough to definitely make again.

I was pretty impressed with the quality of these pictures too. I just got the iPhone 8 and so far I haven't had many complaints. The camera seems to do these close up shots fairly nicely.

Have you ever tried jackfruit before?

That looks delicious! We will have to give jackfruit a try. I have never heard of it before.

I hadn't either before a few months ago and I've had this can in my pantry almost since then. So it was awesome to finally give it a try. If you give it a whirl let me know what you think!

Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing this recipe idea! I don't remember trying jackfruit and now I'm curious... I'll check it out, thanks. Being that you're local, you can find the cans of jackfruit at any Trader Joes. Let me know if you try it out!

It looks like it was very tasty, can be used as a menu of food for the family, nice post

Thanks! It was yummy!

I love BBQ Jackfruit! I usually have in tacos on on a pizza.

I was contemplating tacos, but had that recipe on hand and already had all the ingredients. I'll have to try it on pizza some time for sure, thanks!
