I have a friend. Yes, I do. Actually, I have a few friends, believe it or not... and, a short time ago we got together when I was in town. One of those friends has a bit more means than many of us and he decided that in celebration of our little reunion, he would treat us to a bottle of a scotch that is considered THE SCOTCH to drink if you're ever only going to drink one scotch - The Macallan 25 Year Old.
Here's the thing about stuff like this: At a price tag of around $1900.00 US for a scotch, many of us would pass without a pause. That's a month's salary for many. Even more for some others. It's not worth it, right? Well... Since I didn't have to take out a small loan or put my eldest back into public school to try it, it most definitely is. BUT, understand, I don't think you should get divorced over it or go into bankruptcy for a lone scotch, but definitely, if the chance arises, drink it!
Drink it slowly. Savor it. Enjoy it. What amazes me about the liquors or wines that live up to their hype is their legs - they go on forever.
The upfront nose is mellow, inviting and even sweet. The Macallan 25 coats your tongue effortlessly. It's apple and vanilla notes overpower the oak and alcohol. But after you swallow your first sip, wait a few moments before your next. Breathe gently. Feel the scotch linger. Your palate will thank you because the beauty of this liquor is that it will sit with you as long as you want. No need to rush into the next. It's still there.
And that's where the mystique of something like the Macallan 25 comes from. It's not the upfront, it's the ever after. As a matter of fact, it's been a couple months already since we shared this gem and the flavor still rests inside me. A flavor and sensation I will always hold on to...
... just not one I'd sell my first born child for.
Sounds good, I'll have to try this technique with my next Corona :)
