It has been said eating organic foods have greater nutritional benefits and can even fight cancer. That is why they sometimes spend twice as much on organic products compared to non organic ones.
The recent purchase of Whole Foods by Amazon highlights the explosive growth in organic sales.
The US Department of Agriculture says that foods labeled organic must be:
- Grown without synthetic fertilizers
- No GMO
- Animals raised without antibiotics or hormones
- Access to outdoors
But are organics healthier? Are they worth the money?
Here is the situation.
Concerns started growing about the growing use of pesticides and growth hormones in animal feed.
In 1990 Congress passed the Organics Foods Production Act to develop national Standards for organic foods.
And organic products become more common. Mainstream grocery chains started producing their own organic lines.
Here is the argument.
Proponents say organic foods have more nutrients including antioxidants and vitamins. They also suggest eating organic limited exposure to toxic chemicals that may lead to certain cancers.
But while eating organic does reduce your exposure to pesticides there is no that the trace amounts in food are a danger.
Scientific surveys haven’t food that organics foods are much more nutritious. And just because food is organics does not mean it is good for you. It may be nearly as high in sugar, sodium and other unhealthy ingredients as non organic products.
Yet, more farms are going organic to feed the appetite for pure foods. With big supermarkets chains selling more organic products and Amazon’s determination to drive down prices at Whole Foods, organic foods should only increase in popularity healthier or not.
Personally, I prefer to eat healthy which includes organic and look forward to prices dropping through competition.

My family goes organic with meat at the stores. We try and shop our farmers market near us for fresh eggs and produce. We've developed relationships with several of the growers and have been on a tour of one of their gardens. The flavor of a farm fresh egg is beyond anything you can find in the store. Store bought eggs can be as old as a month or longer. Thanks for the post!
You know that reminds of when we visit my brother and his family. They have three hens in the back and feed them all of the leftovers. The eggs taste super delicious 😋
Around 2 years ago my family and I began a slow switch to organic foods and have never looked back. Personally I like knowing that my food has been grown/reared by a more natural, traditional way of farming. I generally find that organic whole foods are more flavoursome and I would say we feel healthier for having made the switch.
That said, just because the label says organic does not necessarily mean healthy. As you pointed out it may be loaded with sugar for example, which as we know doesn't do us any good organic or not.
For me going organic also made me cook more from scratch as generally processed/convenience organic foods are limited. This has been such a blessing though as I now have full control over what goes into our food.
Thanks to my organic journey I'm still discovering new things I can make for myself without turning to store bought options. I certainly wouldn't go back!
It is so important to read and understand the labels so you know what is in your food!
With three little girls in the house I only want to give them the best.
Yes, couldn't agree more. I do feel food labeling is becoming harder to understand though, especially where GMOs are concerned. Another reason I'm trying to cook more from scratch.
Sounds like you're doing a great job at making sure your girls eat well :)
Organic farming is provably bettet for the environment! It's better for the future health of the planet.
You are right. How important it is for the earth to not pollute the soil and rotate the crops.
Good post , cleaner food is the reason I started building my site. We won't mention Fukushima's radiation as being the scary reason do you need another reason . Come check out my post @rustynut . Thank you again , Steem on !
What is going to happen with our food supply? Is Pacific fish even safe to eat anymore? I think organic chicken may be the safest choice right now.
One of best post about health @jordanlindsey. It really works and I also recommend to eat food to maintain your health.
You are right. Diet (what put into our bodies), exercise and mental health!
Organic foods are foods from the right source.
Oh you are right. Sounds like a great marketing campaign too. I want the best food from the best source!
I think they definitely taste better
YES! Without question. You can definitely taste the difference. Even more so the fresher it is!
Thank you for sharing. There are plenty of argument for and against organic. I think that avoiding toxins in our diet as much as I can is a must. Unfortunately, organic is not widely available where I am from so I try to grow my own, or choose in season fresh fruit and vegetables.
I am truly hoping that in the next few years organic foods are more widely available. We deserve to at least have the choice to what we put into our bodies. I also hope the prices become more affordable.
Yes, I agree. Unfortunately it all comes down to economics. Simple supply and demand. It is not easy for farmers to change from conventional farming to organic. If we want to feed the masses with good quality food conventional farming still has its place but hopefully we can have some more options when it comes to eating organic foods. Organic food is very limited where I am from.
Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally-grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods.

The only times I've ever heard the claim that organic food has more nutrients such as fibre and calcium are in debunkings such as this. The emphasis I usually hear is on the toxicity of pesticides, fertilisers and hormones, and overuse of antibiotics. You say it don't have more vitamin C, etc. Who cares? I didn't think it did. Then you move on to pesticides and admit that the levels are lower in organic food, but try to make that not count by saying all the levels are under the thresholds. Well, of course traditional farming meets its own thresholds. It would be a scandal if it didn't. The point is that organic farming improves on that.
Organic produce has less hormones and antibiotics, when these are key reasons to eat it. This is a matter not only of the direct effects on the person eating the food, but also the release into the environment. Antibiotic resistance in particular is a major problem. It is pointless to tell doctors not to prescribe them if the infection is likely to be viral: even if we stopped all prescribing, farms would still each be pumping kilos of the stuff into livestock, and those antibiotics are then in our food and our ecosystems, making us all vulnerable to bacterial infections.
I am not sure if you read the article it its entirety or not which provided both sides of the debate but I fully support organic food and feed it to my family.
