Stop throwing these food parts away

in #food7 years ago (edited)

You might not know this, but there are a lot of fruits and vegetables parts that are a lot healthier than you might think and you usually throw them away. Instead of wasting good, healthy food, learn what’s good for you and how to use it.

Many of us throw away apple skin, but it actually contains an antioxidant that’s very good for your lungs and brain and it can protect you from cancer. Besides that, apple skin contains a lot more fiber and vitamins than the apple itself.

Chard, also known as Swiss beet, is a plant similar to spinach, which is known for it’s high content of minerals and vitamin A. But not only the leaves are edible. The roots of this plant contain an amino acid called glutamine that helps your body regenerate. You can slice the root and use it along with the leaves.

Nobody eats the skin of oranges, because it’s a little bitter. But nutritionists say that the skin can play a big part in lowering your cholesterol level, and it’s even more efficient than medication. But don’t worry, you won’t have to chew the skin. You just have to grate it and use it in your recipes. It tastes really good in some cakes, and you can also use it in meat recipes.

Red beet is currently used just for it’s root, but it used to be cultivated for it’s leaves. And that’s understandable, because the leaves contain a lot of fiber, calcium, iron, and vitamins A and K.

Lastly, one of the most preferred foods of all times, potatoes. We all love them, they’re easy to cook, they taste really good and we can use them in almost every recipe. But we always throw away the skin.

The thing is, the skin is full of fiber, vitamin B and C, calcium and many others. There are not a lot of recipes in which you can use it, but you can eat the skin when you cook the potatoes in the oven.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays an essential role in maintaining a healthy weight, which is an important part of overall good health.
Being overweight or obese can lead to health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease and stroke. Being underweight could also affect your health.
Check whether you're a healthy weight by using our Healthy weight calculator.
Most adults need to lose weight, and need to eat fewer calories to do this. If you're trying to lose weight, aim to eat less and be more active. Eating a healthy, balanced diet will help: aim to cut down on foods that are high in saturated fat and sugar, and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.
Don't forget that alcohol is also high in calories, so cutting down can help you to control your weight.
Physical activity can help you to maintain weight loss or be a healthy weight. Being active doesn't have to mean hours at the gym: you can find ways to fit more activity into your daily life. For example, try getting off the bus one stop early on the way home from work, and walking.
Being physically active may help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. For more ideas, see Get active your way.
After getting active, remember not to reward yourself with a treat that is high in energy. If you feel hungry after activity, choose foods or drinks that are lower in calories, but still filling.
If you're underweight, see our page on underweight adults. If you're worried about your weight, ask your GP or a dietitian for advice.

Thanks for reading my post!

your welcome, I really like posting useful.

It can be hard to change your eating habits. It helps if you focus on small changes. Making changes to your diet may also be beneficial if you have diseases that can be made worse by things you are eating or drinking. Symptoms from conditions such as kidney disease, lactose intolerance, and celiac disease can all benefit from changes in diet. Below are suggestions to improve your health. Be sure to stay in touch with your doctor so they know how you are doing.

Find the strong and weak points in your current diet. Do you eat 4-5 cups of fruits and vegetables every day? Do you get enough calcium? Do you eat whole grain, high-fiber foods? If so, you’re on the right track! Keep it up. If not, add more of these foods to your daily diet.
Keep track of your food intake by writing down what you eat and drink every day. This record will help you assess your diet. You’ll see if you need to eat more or less from certain food groups.
Think about asking for help from a dietitian. They can help you follow a special diet, especially if you have a health issue.

Almost everyone can benefit from cutting back on unhealthy fat. If you currently eat a lot of fat, commit to cutting back and changing your habits. Unhealthy fats include things such as: dark chicken meat; poultry skin; fatty cuts of pork, beef, and lamb; and high-fat dairy foods (whole milk, butter, cheeses). Ways to cut back on unhealthy fats include:

Rather than frying meat, bake, grill, or broil it. Take off the skin before cooking chicken or turkey. Try eating fish at least once a week.
Reduce any extra fat. This includes butter on bread, sour cream on baked potatoes, and salad dressings. Use low-fat or nonfat versions of these foods.
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables with your meals and as snacks.
Read the nutrition labels on foods before you buy them. If you need help with the labels, ask your doctor or dietitian.
When you eat out, be aware of hidden fats and larger portion sizes.
Staying hydrated is important for good health. Drink zero- or low-calorie beverages, such as water or tea. Sweetened drinks add lots of sugar and calories to your diet. This includes fruit juice, soda, sports and energy drinks, sweetened or flavored milk, and sweetened iced tea.

I think you should made a post on this topic!

There are a lot of preserves and chemical being sprayed on these fruits. Thus right now it is better to avoid eating the skins of fruit. Even if someone wants to eat then they should eat only after washing the fruits that they are eating.

I have heard that in some parts of the world a layer of wax is being put on the apples to make them shine and preserve.

Some say that this is harmful and some say that this is not harmful. majority thinks that this is harmful.

I usually like eating apples with their skin. I can't imagine an apple without skin over it.

Thanks for reading my post and for your valuable comment!

You are welcome. Your posts are always interesting to read. sometimes they help me refresh my knowledge and sometimes they help me gain more knowledge.

I heared of people eating intire kiwis, I cant imagine eating it. But I always eat the intire apple.

It's recommended that we eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and veg every day. It's easier than it sounds.
Why not chop a banana over your breakfast cereal, or swap your usual mid-morning snack for a piece of fresh fruit?
Unsweetened 100% fruit juice, vegetable juice and smoothies can only ever count as a maximum of one portion of your 5 A DAY. For example, if you have two glasses of fruit juice and a smoothie in one day, that still only counts as one portion.

Thank you for sharing

Its a very useful and interesting post.Because most of us do this without knowing the nutrition value of the fruit waste. Most of the fruit skin is filled with different kinds of vitamins except coconut ha ha ha.We just have to redesign our eating habit of this fruits.Thank's a lot for such important post.Wish good health to every one.

Good nutrition is one of the keys to a healthy life. You can improve your health by keeping a balanced diet. You should eat foods that contain vitamins and minerals. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, and a source of protein.

Ask yourself the following questions. If you answer yes to any of them, talk to your doctor about your health. You may need to improve your eating habits for better nutrition.

Do you have a health problem or risk factor, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol?
Did your doctor tell you that you can improve your condition with better nutrition?
Do diabetes, cancer, heart disease, or osteoporosis run in your family?
Are you overweight?
Do you have questions about what foods you should eat or whether you should take vitamins?
Do you think that you would benefit from seeing a registered dietitian or someone who specializes in nutrition counseling?

I always eat the apple with the skin. I eat guava skin as well. I may have eaten something made of orange skin

@jwolf. This is really informative. I never knew that apple and orange skins are healthy to our body.I do eat apple with the skin but for oranges,no way.Just as you said, they skin of orange is bitter. But now that I know it lowers cholesterol level,I thin I will try eating a little.
For potato i do peel it off.But once in a while I boiled the potato and then peel it off before eating. It is wonderful skins of fruits as you mentioned do give our body fiber and vitamins.

Thank God we don't chew orange peals

Really good information!! It wasn't until I grew my own fruits and veggies that I learned to not be wasteful with anything. One thing I never quite understood is why people don't eat potato skins... They're the best part! And also the healthiest :)

We try not to let things go to waste there is always a use for things! We used to compost all our unused vegetables in New Zealand but this is alot harder in Spain (lack of space, living in apartments means no compost bins). Its good to know that there are other uses for things these will come in handy

My father always ate the entire apple, so I adopted the habit and started to do it. The seeds are bitter to start, but as you do it more they become sweet and almost the middle of the tootsie pop.

that's something really interesting even i don't know about it wonderful post i have read today :D

i knew about the orange but didn't knew about the apple so thanks a lot for sharing this @jwolf

Yeah but sometimes the skin is treated with wax or other chemical compounds for a conservation purpose. In these cases it can be tricky to choose what to do.

good information
