A yummylicious celebration @ Kim Ga Nae Korean BBQ

in #food7 years ago (edited)

So we decided to have Korean BBQ for a close one's birthday recently. After some googling, we decided on Kim Ga Nae @ Uptown. The restaurant is owned by an elderly Korean couple, hence when called to make reservation, was pleasantly greeted by a typical 'Anyoung haseyo' ('Hello' for Korean) by Mrs. Kim herself. :)

Located on a double storey shop lot just opposite Starling Mall, finding the place was quick and easy. Upon arrival, we were greeted and shown to our table.

Almost everything looked good on the menu. So it seemed like a wise choice to order a mixture of dinner set (for 3-4 pax) and some dishes ala carte, so as we had more variety to share from and get to try a bit of every dish.

The set consists of pork belly & baby octopus (for grill), Kimchi soup (Kimchi jigae), stir-fry glass noodles and rice.

Meanwhile, for ala carte we had Korean seafood pancake (haemul pajeon), Ginseng chicken soup (samgye tang), Kimchi tuna riceballs, Korean spicy chicken (dakgalbi) and 2 types of noodles, which are Korean cold noodles in chilled broth (mul-naengmyeon) and Ramen (with delicious homemade broth).

The meal also comes with refillable side dishes, and a generous helping of lettuce, usually wrapped & eaten with the grilled meat dipped in signature sauce. For mains, I personally liked the Ginseng chicken soup best. The sweetness of the soup from all its ingredients, boiled for hours to perfection, is a pure joy & comfort to have.

What I like about this restaurant is that it is not a restaurant chain hence gives a rather personal feel when patronizing it, with the lady boss herself personally taking orders from customers (without the need for pen & paper because she knows the menu by heart!) and the boss himself engaging with customers (and occassionally throwing in a free can of beer!).

After the scrumptious meal, we were filled to the brim and there wasn't even room left for dessert - the birthday cake. The bill eventually came up to about RM 240, which was rather reasonable for 6 pax. All of us went home with a happy stomach, with our clothes smelling like Korean bbq.
