So as mentioned in a previous post (https://steemit.com/food/@laabo-afolabi/why-i-m-using-a-ketogenic-diet-to-gain-weight-and-how-i-get-4000-calories-a-day-on-it), I have a switch to a completely ketogenic diet. One food that is very essential for maintaining adequate fat intake while on this diet is the avocado.
If you've ever purchased avocados, I'm sure you can imagine how costly it would be to maintain my level of consumption, which for the sake of bulking, has increased to at least 3 per day. Luckily, being a child of immigrants who struggled when first landing in Canada, I've had several penny pinching techniques imparted to me, one of which has proved quite resourceful for the acquisition of discounted fruit.
So depending on your country, you may be acquainted with the "reduced to clear" section in the grocery store. These are produce items that are old and/or bruised. They're packaged with styrofoam and plastic wrap and put on a designated shelf with the price reduced for the purpose of clearing them. I am often able to find avocados on these shelves for cheap and the softer ones are of no issue because I use them in shakes.
Reduced to clear produceNow, the trick is for the days when the shelves are empty. What I do is approach an employee and say the following, "could you please put some avocados on reduced for me." Sometimes they're perplexed by the odd nature of the request but in every case they've obliged. They'll go through the avocados and pick out the ones that look a little softer but are still shake-worthy and package them for me. They often rush through the process however, and still end up getting me nicer ones. Most recently I did it at WalMart and ended up with seven avocados for one dollar!
SCOOOOOOOOOORE!!! 7 avocados for a dollar!So there's the trick. Go out and give it a shot if you like avocados as much as I do!
