Now, I’m a frequent traveller to Thailand (not for the reasons you may be thinking off, boys) with my girlfriend Debbie, and we love our Thai food.
And I know, many who have tried the food in Thailand will always compare the authentic-ness when they come back to Malaysia, which I admit, not many came close. Come on! Even the water is different, so how can you truly compare when the basest of ingredients are different.
However, there is one which we liked very much though, call Frame Thai. It’s very close to the Thai counterpart, and almost 98% authentic.
It’s a low ceiling, slightly poorly ventilated shoplift below an old apartment. Seriously, you could be passing by this gem of a Thai place everyday and missed it, because it’s at the most unassuming place. Parking is free and ample, because most of the residents’ vehicles are away for work.
The menus are pretty straight forward, because it has pictures attached to every item, along with the price.
Our usual favourites are:
Rice with Pork Leg
You’ll probably see many customers eating this. Fast to serve, delicious to the taste-buds, aside from the brown rice, it’s a common meal you can find along the streets of Thailand. Yup, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Pai, Krabi Town, Phuket, all over Thailand! Except the muslim areas, of course, for the obvious reasons!
So with this meal, you get a very generous portion of pork, soft and sometimes melting the moment you put it in your mouth. It’s served with some vegetables (quite a lot for most people, but as a vege lover, I always have to order an extra plate) and a whole egg, with a tiny bowl of soup. The chilli sauce is a kicker, and I never had enough of it. Nowadays they hid it though, so for extras, you’ll have to ask from the staff.
Rice Noodles in Spicy Soup
Debbie’s usual. The noodles in Thailand has a different texture, but Frame Thai make do with what they can get locally. Comes in 2 sizes, your broth will be some chilli paste/oil, bean sprouts, peanuts, and mince meat. For extra flavour in the soup, help yourself with their special fish/squid sauce.
This fish/squid sauce?! You can eat anything with it. Steam fish, fried rice, random soup, chicken porridge, stir fried vegetables. Literally every it touches has an instant syioking taste. I call it the magic sauce. Taste something bland and boring? Sprinkle the magic sauce on it and boom! New dish! Reborn!
Friend Omelette with Acacia
Instead of the usual fried vegetables, we thought we should try something different. And today, it was this dish. Commonly found in Koh Samui and some obscure stalls in Chiang Mai and Bangkok, it’s not an easy dish to find in Thailand, let alone here. Omelette is a big thing in Thailand, but with acacia inside, it’s rare.
The taste was decent, the vege was fresh and the egg was oily. Not close to the one we frequent in Koh Samui, but it will make do. I totally did not dig the chilli sauce they gave me, but the raw carrots and cabbage strips under the omelette? Love it! (Yes, no joke about the vege lover part)
We weren’t very hungry today, so we didn’t opt for the soup, which if we had, we normally would go for the clear Tom Yam Soup (this is one SPICY shit!), or the normal one. The fried omelette with Acacia? Here’s a little trick. Dunk it into either of those soup (though in Thailand the turmeric soup is the best match) and enjoy the mix and mash of flavours.
I wouldn’t say its the cheapest here, for those 3 items costed us RM34, which was still ok for one of the best Thai food in town.
Go ahead and try them out this weekend. Bring some wet tissue and maybe a towel, cause you probably will be sweating your ass off, haha!
