Meet the Korean Corndog: Kogo

in #food6 years ago (edited)

I've mentioned previously that I have been reading through a book about sausages from around the world. I've been progressing fairly slowly, as with information about sausages, just like sausages themselves, you can only digest so much in one sitting.

I've been through Europe (this seems to be the most prolific sausage continent), Africa (merguez anyone?), and now I find myself in Asia. From what I can tell, based on the book, Asian sausages seen to be largely retreads of sausages from other places, but with some things added. There's nothing wrong with this. Our world is full of people taking someone else's thing, adding something of their own, then marketing it as a brand new thing. Thomas Edison did this. Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Girl Talk, the list goes on and on.

But every once in a while you run across an idea that is so ingenious in its simplicity, you can't imagine why no one thought of it before. It seems so obvious in retrospect. Enter the Kogo.

This is a hot dog on a stick, battered, rolled in French Fry pieces, then deep fried. It is sold out of carts on the streets in large cities in Korea. While I don't personally like hot dogs, I know that lots of people do. And the most common side dish to eat with a hot dog is fries. And people put ketchup and mustard on both of them. It's a perfect pairing.

Has anyone tried one of these? Thoughts?
