Happy Weekend Steemit Friends!
One of the few GREAT ADVANTAGES of living in a BIG CITY like NEW YORK is.... THE FOOD.
I love it just for that. It is a foodie paradise. ๐
Sooo many dining options at your doorstep, sooo little time. Really, you couldn't eat your way through the 4,000+ restaurants located in all of the five boroughs.
Today, I want to share with you one of the fantastic foodie finds in my neighborhood,The Milling Room on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
Fellow Steemian @alexpmorris is joining for dinner too!
The Milling Room serves "New American" fare in a "tavern-like atmosphere". The interior space is large and impressive as is the food and the service.
From The Milling Room's website:
"The Milling Room opened in November 2014 and occupies the space which was originally built in 1890 as the luxurious Endicott Hotel. When the original hotel opened, it was described as "in all respects, the finest and best appointed in this part of the city." Designed by Edward Angell, who also designed several other prominent buildings on the Upper West Side, and build by Charles A. Fuller, the hotel was crafted of Pompeian brick and terracotta, including a glass-roofed Palm Room where today in its place is The Milling Room..."
The restaurant is located between 81st and 82nd Streets on Columbus Avenue, just a short block away from the American Museum of Natural History.
I'm feeling peckish... let's take a peek at le menu...
Printed on the bottom left-hand side it reads "Scott Bryan, Chef Proprietor". According to the The Milling Room's website, Scott Bryan has been "described by Anthony Bourdain as "a cult figure among cooks".
So, this should be goooddd...
The tartare, orrr the risotto... I dunno... OOOoooo... Orzo Mac 'n Cheese, yes please!
I'll behave (this time) and choose a "healthier" option. It's chilly out so I'll start with this warming soup...
The curried lentil soup appetizer with madras curry, ginger, coconut milk and crรจme fraiche.
Next, we'll split an entrรฉe and share it as an app...
The chanterelle mushroom risotto entrรฉe with English peas, Reggiano, black truffle and mascarpone cheese.
C'mon, truffles and mascarpone... I had to be a little naughty! Next up, my main dish...
I'm having the Scottish salmon entrรฉe with zucchini noodles, white port and caper chive butter...
And @alexpmorris is enjoying the grilled skirt steak entrรฉe with glazed heirloom carrots, pommes purรฉe and green peppercorn jus!
Now that I shared a taste of our dining experience with you, here's my quickie review...
The Good
Delicious food!
Fantastic drink menu and wine selection.
Quick and courteous service.
Great space! Large and lofty main dining room and a separate bar room.
Live music in the bar room!
Convenient UWS location.
Easy to make a reservation by phone or Opentable.
The Bad
The menus are highly flammable (arghh... don't ask!).
A tad pricy $$$$ for the Upper West Side (but not unreasonable).
The Ugly
None! Just yummmm!

looks really delicious, and it's making me really really hungry now just staring at it! And while that's awfully tempting right about now, I think I'm gonna first go grab me some DIY PIZZZZZZZZA! ๐

now that's what I'm talkin' about! ๐ lol
OMG, my mouth is watering now. It all sounds yummy (except the octopus, gag). I'll take the market salad, and braised duck please. It is so great that Steemer's can share foods from around the world. That is amazing that the hotel had been turned into a restaurant. I love when places with history, are used for something else, and not sit and rot. Thanks for sharing that mouth watering post :-) .Ya got me following now, but hopefully I do so, on a full belly.
The market salad is a great choice! I love when older, historical spaces are re-purposed too. It's such a shame and pity when beautiful buildings are torn down and replaced with inferior structures (imo).
Thanks for stopping by @pixiehunter! Glad to have you as a new follower ; )
Yep, I agree. There are a few buildings out here that are just rotting away. One is an old railway station. It too could have been turned into a gallery or a luncheon, but now it's falling apart.
I look forward to the foodie trips you share. Now off to check out that pizza crust recipe. And scrolling by that burger is making me super hungry, lol.
They're all mouth-watering! It's already lunchtime where I am and I saw this article just in time.
I hope it inspired you to treat yourself to a yummy lunch!
may I contact all of you at facebook or twitter?
Thank a lot.
That food looks delicious! I need one of those restaurants in my little town!
It's here in when you visit NYC!
I agree that the food at Milling Room is special. I remember when it first opened, how the owner hovered around each table making sure that everything was perfect. It's a big space and probably very expensive to run. In the 70's and 80's, The Endicott was a very different place: it was a notorious welfare hotel, with a murder reported every month or so. People stayed away from the area. Then it was bought, refurbished and turned into a co-op, and the area became gentrified. Before the Milling Room, the space was a popular meeting and dining place called Calle Ocho, but the rent probably was too much for them. Calle Ocho moved a block away to The Excelsior, an upbeat hotel on 81st Street. In the past year or so, however, one floor of the Excelsior became a homeless shelter! Plus ca change!
Kudos for your report.
Thanks for the additional history concerning that space and the surrounding neighborhood @domo! Your comment could be a fascinating topic for you to explore for an upcoming Steemit post! : P
Wow, this looks amazing and so delicious!
I enjoyed it thoroughly! ; )
i'd be there just for the jazz! haha great review ๐
Haha! Jazz or food or both it's a sweet choice! ; )
Delicious i am salivating
Haha! Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks delicious. I love so much color in a meal
I was delish and I couldn't agree more!
Thought you were out to eat food? Did you chomp on flesh by accident? Sorry, couldn't resist that, lol. Darn typos. I agree with @zenkly. Colors for some reason, seem to make things taste even better.
Yes, convenient typo. Not big into self-cannibalism (or cannibalism in generally). However, occasionally I do drink a Zombie (or two or three)....
Lol, I have not tried a Zombie. And hopefully no zombie tries me, if we ever get bombarded with them in the future, lol.
serving up @michellectv now on a platter! lol
How 'bout you serve me on silver platter! I'd like that : P
