And then the lord said, "Go forth and eat meat."
I guess I'll start by saying it's been a Looooooooong time since my last post. Birth of a child, pinkeye for the whole family and some other unexpected events can leave little time for posting. Here's to hoping I'm back in action for the long haul.
I was invited to a restaurant by a friend of mine called "肉山" or " Meat Mountain"
What makes this restaurant very unique in Niigata is how difficult it is to go to. Usually, if you want to go somewhere to eat, a reservation (basically to anywhere other than popular holidays) can be made a day before or even day of.
Not here. It's invite only and no reservations are allowed from newbies. Once you've got your initial foot in the door, you can make reservations and bring others, who will then be able to follow suit.
It reminded me of when I was in college and I got an obscure invite from a friend to the little-known (at the time) email beta client "gmail." Like, "Hey, let's use this email client no one knows about because hotmail sucks!"
Me: Yeah, I don't wanna use AOL no mo'.
Friend: Yeah and people will be all confused cuz their like "g" what?
Me: Yeah, and it's google. For sure they won't ever try to learn all about our online habits. We can do whatever we want with this account!
Anyway, it was definitely worth it. The food was great, unique and the small atmosphere was exactly what I was in the mood for at that particular time.
The menu is revolving and always different. On this particular night, we were served (in no particular order) deer, horse, pig, lamb and cow.
First up (after the first beer):
Deer of course.
Not just any Deer either. Raw deer, my dear.
The horse sausage paired with the beer quite nicely.
More meat followed more meat.
A lighter shade of meat followed a darker shade of meat which preceded a darker meat grilled a wee-bit on the rare side.
I'm no advocate of rabbit food, but on the otherhand I think besides meat the only thing I ate to this point were a few tomatoes and some mushrooms.
Why not have some cucumber? Like a whole cucumber? No, silly. Cucumber cut in half and served with miso, duh.
Ok, that was nice, I guess. Now back to increasing my environmental footprint.
Lamb, oh sweet lamb.
To finish the evening off the meal we were served curry and rice which was bomb!
After that we went to a couple more bars before we all went our separate ways. Once home, I wasn't quite ready for bed so I streamed a little ESPN 2 to watch some highlights. I got a kick out of this ad...

That place is called nikkuyama because after you eat there that's what your stomach becomes, a mountain of meat.

Yeah, I was pleasently surprised with how well it sat. Only the good stuff i guess. Going back in February when I can make another reservation - I'll keep you posted!
