MY FIRST YELLOW KIWI AND OUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

in #food7 years ago

Finally! It's about time!

This was so cool to find. I love food and I really enjoy kiwi fruit, but I've only ever eaten the traditional fuzzy green ones and the cold hardy ones before. Though I knew that a yellow variety existed, I had never found any... until the other day!

YELLOW KIWI VLOG

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

Not only will we be eating these wonderful yellow kiwi fruit, we will be saving the seeds to plant as well. We have already been doing this with the green kiwis. Since we are right on the edge of the appropriate growing zone, it's a risk, but we might be able to pull it off.

This is one of the kiwi plants that we started from seed. To check out the process, you can see my post from last year about it. Just CLICK HERE

CLICK HEREI also picked up a few of the cold hardy kiwi plants when I was up in Wisconisn. @Msgreenthumb had purchased them, but they were not quite right for her growing zone, so she sold them to me. For more on that story,

Also, I think it is worth mentioning that although these yellow ones taste very similar to the green ones, they were far less fuzzy. That will definitely come in handy and help me save time on shaving.

HOW TO PROPERLY SHAVE A KIWI - 3 METHODS

We will see how this works out as we continue, but we are excited to try as many varieties of food bearing plants that we can grow in our area. One day, hopefully we will have an amazing food forest, but for now, we just have to keep working towards that goal! Steem on!

here's the proof:As always, I'm @papa-pepper and

What a nice kiwi, here in South Africa we only get one kind have not seen this before, well done.

Where in South Africa are you from, just curious? 😄 😁 😆

Port Edward KZN :-)

😃 😄 😁 😆

Nice Golden Kiwi...A regular kiwi is mushier and has more juice. Gold Kiwi is bigger and has more meat or fruit. Not as juicy but sweeter Regular kiwi may have a tart taste to go with the sweet...Awesome hard work to have such great plant.

I see that you are familiar with it then! Thanks for the extra info!

I recently discovered it in Costco. It tastes delicious. Much sweeter than green one. It's called gold kiwi, I think, and origin country is New Zealand.

I think China, but they began to grow them in NZ and then "rebranded" them as "kiwi" fruit.

Nice! We live in Panama now and I wonder if we can grow kiwi here. It might not get warm or cold enough in our area. The temperature range is 58-78 every day. And it rains a lot during rainy season. I need to look into this. I don't remember seeing kiwi at the grocery store. So cool that you grew yours from seeds! We have quite a few things that we have planted from fruit we have eaten - cantaloupe, pineapple, peppers...

never heard of yellow kiwis...good skills - its near harvest time for our pumpkins which we grew from last years seeds...kids are pumped -

thanks for being awesome

Glad to hear that you are saving seeds, and that the kids are involved! Great work!

Yellow kiwi? No that's the first time I've heard about that. What's this appropriate gardening zone you've mentioned in this post?

COLD HARDY KIWI - Some "cold hardy" Kiwi are able to be grown as far north as Zone 3. Others are only zones 5-9.

TRADITIONAL KIWI - These seem to usually be good as far north as Zone 7, which we are on the border of.

I love all fruits! Sweet ones, sour ones and even the bitter ones, all of them. And it's been so amazing after I moved here in Vietnam 3years ago, the ammount of different fruits is phenomenal! And at least half of them I've had never seen or heard before, it's amazing! Some of them are huge like Jackfruit, or small like lychee but they are all delicious! Except one, Durian! The taste andthe smell of durian is just unbearable, can't eat that in anyway, the locals love it of course. Maybe it's one those things which you have to grow into, but Im sure I never will. One of the most delicious ones which I had never seen before is definedly Mangosteen, the taste is kind of a mix of sweet, sour and tropical, so unique and so delicious! Also Mango has been one of my favourites always, and here they have like 10 different kind of mangos, all delicious in their own way, it's a mangoheaven! I wish long life and growth to your edible forest. I have a similar dream, to make my own fruit garden some day.

wow nice information

Omg..
I salivate, because just look at this yellow kiwi fruit imagine how fresh it tastes

Great "invention"!

Playing with nature, great collaboration!

Congratulations!

Enjoy @nature.art, another kind of nature, another kind of art!

They look and sound good. I have never seen them down here in Florida, What zones do yellow kiwi grow in?

I think Zone 7 and southward. Want some seeds?

Yes Please. I will message you my address on Discord.

wow the kiwi looks beautifull! Upvoted :)

Good that you found this yellow one..I was not aware of it...have seen only the green ones.. i think the taste is sour.

i have never had the yellow ones and was told they are quite good

Is there any difference in taste compared with classical green one?

There is a bit of a difference.

I love yellow kiwi

nice post !i love the yellow kiwi , i made this fruit this evening , not bad !

Wow..i like

Do you think this Kiwi has more Vitamine C than the regular one? @papa-pepper

Not sure. Hopefully it doesn't have more Yellow # 5.

Nature won't fool us...unless this is a GMO Kiwi...:)

I hope it does not affect taste and fruit benefit. It is also better to stay away from genetic manipulation, and the final product is rich in the vitamins of this fruit.
It is the yellow kiwi waiting for him with all patience, my best wishes for you

Kiwi is one of my favorite fruit, nice sharing

I had no clue there were yellow ones. I don't care for them, but hubby might like them. I'll keep an eye open for them.

Good luck growing your own!

Looks great. Having your own kiwi in the garden is my target too. I planted 2 kiwi plants this year. They are still small and we are having autumn in a few days. So growth is expected next year, hopefully. If my rabbits do not break out and kill the plants (again). LOL 😊

Wot? no fur? Where's the fun in that? hehehe

We have loads of golden kiwifruit here, as well as the normal kiwifruit. I prefer the fuzzy ones myself, but I'll eat the other as well.

Give load of these to your kids as winter approaches to stave of colds and flu. They are really good for that.

It's not just the vitamin C in them. there is something else that seems to boost the immune system and make fighting off the colds etc much easier.

Once when I had a really bad cold I ate seven of them at once, and the next day the cold was gone. totally cured overnight.

It was not a cheap fix however as I was in England at the time and the kiwifruit cost one pound each!!

For that same price i could have bought a sack of kiwifruit in New Zealand hehehe.

I have bought both sorts on Friday to compare - both were good but the golden was much sweeter and creamier.

It's funny to hear you call them "Kiwi", in NZ we call them Kiwifruit..and we are Kiwi's. I happen to live in the Kiwifruit capital of the world in the Bay of Plenty New Zealand. We have had the Gold's for quite a while and I think I like them the best. The skin is a lot thinner, with a wash you can eat the skin as well. They have even developed a Kiwifruit the size of a grape, you just pop them in your mouth..yum!! I'm not sure if they are exporting these yet. The season has finished here now and the pruning is about to start. So glad you got to try the Gold

Very good post @papa-pepper . You do not talk about the taste of that yellow kiwi

Is a very delicious fruit to me fascinates me, it hurts that here in venezuela is very expensive, but from time to time I give myself the pleasure of buying it and enjoying it. In the USA the kiwi is like here the "mango", an economic fruit and easy to get: D

@papa-pepper where can I find this amazing kiwi?

I found it at Harter House in Hollister, MO. I can send you some seeds though if you can't locate any.

Hollister mo is only like 3 hours from me, we should get together sometime!

This is just wonderful my friend, i wish i could get hold of some of these beauties, i would do some magic in the kitchen with them!

Delightful! That last pic definitely shows what seems to be a fuzz-less fruit. Now I'm going to look for them. Thanks!

I like fruit too. Right now I am drinking this mix of 10 or 12 fruits and vegetables and up to ten spices.

Thanks for sharing us nice kiwi.
