in #food5 years ago (edited)

Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!

It is been a while since I introduced you to some of the wonderful fruits we enjoy here in Yucatan so let me set it right in my today´s post that will be dedicated to one of my very favorite local fruits, the amazing sweet granadilla.

The word sweet is actually a part of its official name and there is a good reason for that. While this fruit is closely related to the passion fruit aka maracuja which is very sour, the sweet granadilla has a remarkably sweet and soft taste.

Scientifically known as Passiflora Ligularis, the sweet granadilla is native to the Andes Mountain where it is grown in mild temperatures at altitudes ranging between 1,700 to 2,600 m (5,600 to 8,500 ft). Originally, the fruit was grown mainly in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela but it can be now found as far south as in Argentina and as north as in Mexico.

Protected by a hard outer shell, the edible part of the fruit consists of black seeds and gelatinous transparent pulp. The sweet granadilla is very aromatic and rich in vitamin A, vitamic C, phosphorus, calcium and iron.
