Happy Sunday Steemians! I am chilling in the Midlands, here in KwaZulu Natal. It's so beautiful and lush here. @morkrock and I came to visit his brother @thedarksideshow in Howick, which is a small town in a very green, rainy area of South Africa, close to Durban.
Last night we had a lekker braai* nice barbeque. We braaied*barbequed some beautiful lamb chops, steak and garlic bread. I made my favourite chickpea salad. To start, I made a divine baked Camembert cheese served with chilli chutney. Today I will take you through the steps to make your own baked Camembert. It's so much easier than you think, I promise.
INGREDIENTS
- one wheel of your best Camembert
- half a cup of flour
- 1 egg
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- sweet jam of your choice. Cranberry, blackberry or even tomato will work. I used a hot chilli chutney, which was sweet and spicy at the same time.
METHOD
Ensure your cheese is cold. You can even pop it in the freezer while you prepare the other ingredients.
Preheat your oven to 180'C (356'F)
In three seperate bowls, place the flour, breadcrumbs and beaten eggs.
Remove your cheese from the fridge, and try to work through the next few steps as quickly as possible, so that the cheese doesn't warm up.
Dust the cheese in flour.
Now, dip the cheese in the egg, ensuring it is fully covered.
Next, place the cheese in the breadcrumbs, and roll the wheel around, until it is evenly covered in breadcrumbs
Now, repeat the process. Flour, egg, breadcrumbs. We are double coating the cheese, as it is quite a heat sensitive item. By doing it this way, we are ensuring that the cheese doesn't burst or melt through the coating.
Place the cheese in an ovenproof dish, and bake for about fifteen to twenty minutes, until golden brown. Don't turn or flip the cheese. The top should puff up slightly. If it is browning at the bottom but not at the top, you can turn on the grill for a few minutes.
Serve with your sweet jam of choice and crackers. We nommed the cheese in a matter of seconds.
Let me know if you make this sublime dish. If I could do it again, I would definitely double up on the cheese. We were four people and that cheese literally evaporated!
