Also known by the name of Jamalac in French based creole islands, Chompoo in Thailand, Makopa in the Philippines or simply Rose Apple in English, this fruit is not so well known in many parts of the world!
I am lucky to find these from time to time here in Mauritius!
There are quite some varieties of Rose Apples, some sweeter than the other, some bigger and of different colors varying from light green to pink and red to black!
Here in Mauritius the most common one is of red color and of medium size!
These days I am getting some of these lovely fruits from my sister...so eventually I am using them in my bistro for the joy of my guests!
I simply cut them and add to the salad that is served with all grills on the menu!
Based on its appearance, one can easily mistake them for small pears...although the skin is usually quite waxy compared to pears! You just have to scrap it out and discard!
When you cut a rose apple in half, its core is more or less hollow with a bit of a cottony fluff!
Rose apple are eaten with skin on and the texture and taste are in between watermelon and apple!

This fruit brings me back my good old days. We used to pick this with a long stick and get it, or if you know how to climb a tree to pick it. This mild sweet, juicy and crunchy.
How i miss it. It's not common now in the philippines. You are right, we called it makopa. How lovely! Lovely pictures. Thanks for sharing. It means a lot to me seeing this fruit, lovely memories when i was a kid, makes me emotional.
P.s. @progressivechef sorry for the long message. Thank you.
in Venezuela we know as Perita, and it's very tasty
Hello my friend! I have missed you! I am still recovering from my brain bleed. This is my first day in a month that I have been on Steemit! I am SO happy that I am well enough to be back! Your rose apples look delicious! I have never had one before! Yum!
Take care!
In our province in the Philippines we call it "tambis". We had plenty of these fruit bearing trees when I was young. We used to dip it in rock salt and munch away. 😋
In Venezuela we have a similar one, maybe it is from the same family, we call it PUMALACA, it is very good to raise our immune system, it is eaten with its shell or in juices. It is very nutritious. Thanks for sharing.
