Sauted String Beans with Potato (Ginisang Sitaw na may Patatas)

This is my newest recipe for today and I'll be going to share it to you. A simple dish that can be done within less than 10 minutes with just few ingredients.

String beans is a kind of beans inside a pod which is basically common on beans. We called it Sitaw. This vegetable had been with Filipino dishes as one of the ingredients in Kare-kare, ginataang kalabasa na may sitaw and one of my favorite is Adobong baboy na may sitaw.

There are also other beans that we often used in Pancit Bihon and we called it baguio beans. Unlike to string beans, it is shorter and have a different taste too. I have here a seed of sitaw. A friend give it to me but still not yet planted.

It takes several months for one tree of string beans able to bare fruit. No wonder why the price if it sometimes is higher if the period of harvest season is over.

String beans are good for our body. It has Vitamin K and Fiber. It has no cholesterol so it is good for the heart. It also has traces of folic acid and protein. Might better have this during a healthy diet.

So here are my simple, healthy and affordable sitaw/string beans recipe you'll ever had.

1.Wash sitaw and cut into smaller portion like this. Submerge sitaw in water with some salt and let it simmer for atleast 5 minutes over low-medium heat.

2.Drain excess water and allow to cool, set aside. While sitaw is resting, wash and peel potato. Cut into small cubes and set aside.

3.Once cooled down, cut sitaw into smaller pieces just like the same size with the potato. Chopped 2 cloves of garlic.

4.Saute in vegetable oil chopped garlic, sitaw and potato. Sprinkle some fine salt. Stir in occasion over low heat.

5.Add 2-3 tbsp of soy sauce. Stir until all beans are coated in soy sauce. Keep an eye on it. You can also use oyster sauce.

6.After few minutes add some water. You can measure the water in 2 tbsp and add some umami flavor. Cover and let it simmer until the water is gone.

7.Add 1 tbsp of vegetable oil and lastly the add 2 tsp of brown sugar just to balance the salty and slight sweet. Turn off the heat and serve right away.


Here is the final and taste test:

My fiance loves it and I loved it too! I'm kinda surprise that it will taste great aside from the fact that it doesn't have any meat. I guess it can be a vegetarian dish?

Actually the taste of soy sauce stays in every bit of sitaw and potato. The extra vegetable that I added in the last part gives that nice texture. A great ulam that cost less yet healthy and deliciously good. Just try it and taste it for yourself.
