Dining Out - Menya Mappen

Menya Mappen

After my visit to Oiden I noticed that Menya had a site right next door to them, which was convenient, so next time I was in the city it was my target location as I'd been in the mood for noodles for a while. Also convenient when it's a place that's been on multiple of my recommendation lists for a while, specifically cheap eats and ramen.

yeah, that white banner on the right is Oiden

The recommended dish is their bukkake (no, not that kind, but it makes for amusing conversations all the same) Ontama. One of the recommendations was the Mentaiko version, which adds chilli cod roe butter to the udon noodles, soup, and half boiled egg, so I went with this one.

Bukkake! Yeah, it never gets old. Udon noodles with soup poured over them. I could have done with more of the broth

It turns out that I'm not a real fan of cold half boiled egg, but at least I've given it a couple of tries now. I also found that the cod roe wasn't very chilli, and was exceptionally salty, making it all I could taste from the dish. I would have liked some respite from the broth, but it was fairly basic. It was probably well balanced before the cod roe butter, but once it got mixed into the broth it was just all salt all the time.

A piece of chicken karaage, because as we know, I love fried chicken. This was quite good even when it was bought to get me over the minimum card amount

One thing I can say for certain though, the noodles were excellent. They had just that little bit of bite to them that told you that you're eating something before they fell apart in the mouth. I will be back though, because the price is super cheap. The basic dishes start from under $5, and I had to grab an extra even after the can of coke just to get to the $10 minimum for eftpos. This place is certainly popular with a quick turnover. The nearest table in shot was full when I got there and yet all 4 of the people at it in this shot weren't there when I sat down.

Low cost, simple food, made quickly with the same sort of grab a tray before you order, return your tray and dishes at the end that Oiden had, but the return slot here seemed easier to get to. If you want something quick and easy, this will certainly provide you with that, though most of the time I'd look next door to Oiden. The fact that both can survive while being right next to each other is pretty good.

outstanding...and thanks for your support!

Maybe they're both surviving because customers have a look at which one is more full and go to the other one XD

Possibly, though at Menya I only saw 1 couple leave the queue that was out the door and go elsewhere. It seemed that once people decided which side they were heading to, they stuck with that decision.

The food looks delecious!

Sadly it wasn't nearly as delicious as it looks thanks to the super salty cod roe butter, but it was certainly something I'm glad I've tried now.

You tried but you will never have it again :p

Yup. But that is something I do love about trying food. I get to experience things. I can see others loving it, but it really wasn't to my tastes. It was however completely edible, which is ahead of some things I've had in the past
