Earth Buckets for growing sidewalk tomatoes...

in #food8 years ago

Just a couple photos of the Earth Buckets I use to grow tomatoes on my sidewalk. If you have limited space, these can be a good option. It is basically two 5-gallon buckets, one inside the other. The inner bucket has a hole on the bottom to fit an empty butter bowl. I put holes in the butter bowl and fill it with soil. The butter bowl acts as a wick to supply water from below. The bottom bucket will be your water reservoir, using a 3/4 inch piece of PVC pipe attached to the inner bucket with a zip tie. A second hole on the inner bucket allows the pipe to reach the water reservoir in the outer bucket. I also zip tie bamboo sticks to the inner bucket and use yarn to brace the tomato vines as they grow.

We plant our in bales, but this is a good idea especially if you don't have a lot room. The important thing is you grow something!

Agreed. It took a couple of years trying them before they became productive, but there is nothing like a tomato you grew yourself. Those things in the supermarket are just not the same. I posted my blueberry tree yesterday on here. That thing went nuts this year. Already picked over 3 gallons.

Outstanding, love blueberry's!
