Hey everyone! Many of you may have heard that Bangkok has one of the very best street food in the world due to the style of food we have here and varieties of fresh ingredients that come in at cheap prices, Thailand is truly a heaven for foodies around! One of the popular spots among both tourists and Thais is our Chinatown or known by the locals as Yaowaraj.
A vibrant district that is rich in Chinese culture influences and their lifestyle which have been passed down from generation to generation and that of course includes their great food too! Today I would like to take my people down to a few famous food stalls that are popular among the locals. Cheap prices and yummilious guaranteed!!
First stop is here, famous crispy pork and their Kway Chap (Chinese: Kway refers to the flat rice sheets cut into squares and chap refers to the soup.)
(Credit to StarvingTime for the picture as I forgot to take the front view of the stall)
They are known for their crispy pork belly which I love so much! It goes well with their peppery soup and tender noodle sheets. Especially during this changing season period the Kway Chap is just sex.
They usually have a queue line and you will have to wait about 10 minutes to be seated but I promise you it's worth it!
60/80/100 baht, this bowl was medium size 80 baht. (4.5/5)
Next stop is for the shells lovers, here you will find this lovely granny preparing sauces for her customers at a small vendor filled with shells and packed of people waiting to be seated. You will have to collect the ticket number and wait to be called. It is that popular! They serve plates of boiled cockles and mussels.
And this is how the stall looks like, literally on the road side at the street called "Texas"
After 15 minutes wait we got the table right next the granny! She was very sweet and polite. <3 Then came our freshly boiled cockles! What makes this tiny place famous is that they genuinely open each and every shell for their customers, their sauces are quite special too. One is a sour and spicy seafood sauce and the other one is sweet mildly spiced added crushed peanut sauce.
At this point you will be wishing for an ice-cold beer to wash down every slurps!
100 baht per plate (4/5)
Moving on to the next stop, a Chinese duck porridge place. Here is the front of the stall, I just love the vibe of this place.
It's so old-school that it reminds me a lot of my grand parents and their previous house. Very Chinese style like those antique houses in Penang or Hong Kong.
This dish looked very simple, all the ingredients were place below the boiled rice and soup but it was very delightful. Soul soothing and good for the hangover recovering. The duck meat was very tasty while the rice was cooked in such a way that they still kept their shape and not too soaky. Simply delicious!!
40 baht per bowl (4.5/5) and no queue
By the time we left the duck porridge place it was already 22:40 so we decided to warp it up with the highlight of the trip which was a super popular toasted buns stall. They offer many different fillings such as their home recipe of condensed milk, chocolate, homemade peanut butter, fruit jams and kaya (sweet Pandan paste).
However here is the queue. Too insane, when we got their there was no ticket number left . we waited of good 15 minutes for them to top-up the ticket but they took way too long. When they called for queue number 45 to collect their order I heard a couple behind me saying "Our number is 84." That was when I decided to give up so my apologies for this missing review of this incredibly crazy queue breads.
Anyway I took pictures from Starving Time again so you guys have an idea of how these breads look like.
They don't look so fancy here but according to some foodies they say the milk filling is really to die for. I really want to try them out but here is another picture of the queue to remind you all why I did not.
So if you guys are up for the wait then go for it, going early like around 5 PM might be a good idea though.
They are 20 baht per piece.
I went home a little disappointed and now I am considering Foodpanda or LINEMAN apps that get food to your doorstep to deliver these buns for me next time so I don't have to stand and wait in line!
Thanks for reading my post people!
Love,
Annie xo

I am a huge fan of street food as I find that each stall has to have top quality food in order to survive, it's super competitive out there! Such a shame you couldn't get any of those milk buns to be honest I'm with you...I don't think I'd be waiting in that line either!! Thanks for sharing! Keep up the great work :) from a fellow foodie @phamished x
