On the HUIS: Dining Belgian style in Southsea

in #foodlast year

Southsea is adjacent to Portsmouth on the south coast of England. They have a range of dining options. I have had some good Japanese and Thai food there, but we wanted to try this restaurant. It is not very big and so booking is probably essential. HUIS has a strong Belgian theme.

HUIS

As well as serving Belgian favourites such as bitterballen (meatballs), mussels and frites they also have an extensive beer menu.

Beers, page 1

I went for a Westmalle Trappist beer. This is a strong beer brewed by monks. They seemed to have a special glass for each of the beers. My other half tried an alcohol free beer from Bruge, but neither of us was that keen on it. We have actually been to that brewery and I do like some of their other beers.

Trappist beer

As I do not eat meat I was happy to see that there were vegetarian version of some of the dishes. I had a beetroot and mushroom Wellington with Brussels sprouts that was great. The food the others had looked good too. Our waiter was not Belgian, but he was very friendly and helpful. The theme extends to items decorating the place. There were beer bottle lights, old cameras, an accordion, Belgian comics and a Tintin cartoon being projected onto the ceiling.

Bar

For Christmas they had made their own tree.

The many beers are kept in a cage for the safety of customers.

Beers

There are just a couple of toilet at the rear. These are decorated with the ends of beer crates.

Water Loo?

The portions were substantial, but I thought I could manage a dessert. There were starters, but that may have been too much given the size of this waffle with brownie and ice cream.

Dessert

We were allowed to take our time with the meal. I thought prices were quite reasonable, but some of the beers are quite expensive. That is to be expected with such imports. I would happily go there again as there is lots more food and drink to try.

Amazing! This brings back many fond memories :) some of my best times were had in Southsea. I lived there from 2009-2015, and miss Portsmouth every day! Thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane, sure have endless good times in Southsea!:)

Did you eat there? My daughter lives down there for now, so we have been quite a few times. We're getting to know it well.

I actually expected the place to be a bit fancier inside given the way the outside looked. I guess you can never judge. The theme reminds me of the Polish place my wife and I visited over the summer. It looks like this was a delightful meal for you.

I care more about the food and drink than the decor, but I liked this place generally.

Heya! I received a notice that I am voting for some stale witnesses, any advice on who I should support and who I should stop supporting?

See if anyone you vote for has not processed anything lately. I vote for these based on what they do for Hive. I've met some of them.

Thanks appreciate your help!

That looks like a great restaurant with a great beer decorations. I've found that beer is getting more expensive everywhere if you eat out, especially if it's an import. That dessert looks really good! If it weren't in London I'd probably go there tonight! Here we have places somewhat similar, it's always a matter searching the good ones out!

Well it's not in London, but probably a bit far for you to visit. I should have taken more food pics, but I don't want to spoil the mood. We had a great time.

Understandable, it's always nice to get a night out and have a great time!

Ah nice! Looks like you enjoyed yourself 😅 Fun to see this in a place outside Belgium and bitterballen making it to Hive! And that desert and beer look real good! Fun fact: “Huis” is Dutch for “house” or “home”.

Until now I assumed bitterballen was exclusive to the Dutch. Looks like its also a Belgian snack.
I find the toilet decoration very cool. I have seen something similar in other pubs and always find it amusing that these crates end up on the walls of the toilets.

I guess the Dutch and Belgian cultures have some things in common. The Belgians do like their beers though.

Wow this restaurant is really amazing, using drink to make their own Christmas tree. I love that. Weldone boss

Lo más impresionante acá fue el 🌲 de navidad, realmente muy creativo..

Today's businesses are running for only one reason and that is decoration. Good place is to be given to people. When people find a place with good decoration, they sit and enjoy a lot, then they also like other people. If you tell, that place becomes famous
