Ong chili (namprik ong) is a Northern Thai dish made of tomatoes, chilies, chili paste and ground pork and is usually eaten with raw vegetables and sticky rice. I haven't taken a trip up to Lampang, Thailand in months so I was very happy to see my wife make ong chili for lunch.

The kids were at school so this outing fed about 5 people and included fried snakehead fish and stuffed cucumber soup. In most Thai family meals, there's a broth type dish that helps deal with the mouth dryness of rice one gets from time to time. In our case today, our wonderful broth was the cucumbers stuffed with ground pork was stewed with shiitake mushrooms & carrots.

The ong chili has a nice blend that pleases the umami, sour and salty tastes buds while the raw vegetables ensure the bitter taste buds are activated. The highlight of the stuffed cucumber soup was the way the shiitake mushroom flavor added its unique taste to the dish. It was an enjoyable healthy lunch as most are when you control the salt/sodium intake.

The snakehead fish was perfectly fried so you can imagine the great taste. In Thailand, they are so many great fish to fry, steam, grill and boil that it's a cuisine paradise for fish cuisine lovers. For me it's always great to be able to take a break from red and white meat and only eat fried foods on occasion.

When was the last time you had Thai food for lunch?
