Today I made some home made doughnuts, using the traditional recipe from Croatia.
Simple and tasty.
Here is the recipe with step by step photos.
Ingredients
1.5 kg of flour
3 eggs
1/2 l of warm milk
1/2 l of warm water
150ml of cooking oil
8 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon of salt
2 tablespoons of yeast
1/2 teaspoon of rum extract
and plenty of cooking oil to fry the doughnuts in.
Step1
Place all the above ingredients except for the milk, water and oil in to a bowl and mix.
Step 2
Then add the milk, water and oil and mix again, making a dough.
Step 3
Leave the dough in a warm place for it to rise to about double its size and then roll into a 1cm thick layer.
Step 4
Cut out your doughnuts, you can use anything from a drinking glass, empty jar and a small sherry glass for the centers, or simply use a doughnut cutter like the one I have in the photo!
Step 5
Preheat you cooking oil and fry.
Remember to place the lower side of the dough downwards into the oil first. (meaning the side that was botton when cutting them)
Maybe after 1 minute, flip them over and wait for another minute, you may have to flip a few seconds earlier or later depending on the cooking oil and heat. But usually 1 minute per side is enough.
Step 6
Place your doughnuts onto paper so that the paper can absorb the extra oil.
Step 7
Decorate your doughnuts with the topping you like. I used icing sugar today, you can use chocolate too, your choice.
I hope you like this simple doughnut recipe.
Thank you for reading.
My fiance loves these! I may have to surprise her with some :)
That would be nice. I'm sure she will be happy.
These look delightful! I've never seen a doughnut recipe with rum extract. I assume you can try different extracts to change the flavor?
