Hey Steempress!
Since National Day is coming up (Aug 9), I decided to take a break from the 'What to eat in Finland' series and write about McDonalds' new national day special I tried recently - the Har Cheong Gai burger!
For those who don't know, har cheong gai is shrimp paste chicken, and is a Singaporean fried chicken dish often found in hawker centres. This dish is a local favourite which I guess was what inspired McD to come up with the burger. They often release locally inspired dishes especially around National Day to celebrate Singapore's food culture.
Anyway, the set meal at McD includes criss cut fries, 2 har cheong gai drumlets and a drink, and costs about $9.45. It'a pretty pricey but for a limited-time special it's worth a try.
The burger consists of a whole chicken thigh marinated with real prawn paste, coated with crispy bread crumbs and slathered with prawn paste-flavoured mayonnaise. Tbh I thought the mayo made the chicken taste a little funny, maybe because it was a little artificial. The chicken in the burger wasn't as crispy as I expected, but the drumlets were really good, as were the criss cut fries which are always yummy.
I think all the McD specials are pretty unique and worth a try, especially for tourists. I remember reading about McDonalds being a h(e)aven for tourists in a foreign land, as they have guaranteed food safety and are pretty reliable in terms of quality. For first-timers in Singapore who are unfamiliar with our local dishes, these McD specials would definitely help to ease foreigners into our local tastes. I'm always excited to try a local McDonalds' special overseas. As for Singaporeans, McD offers our favourite dishes with a unique twist. If you're a fan of burgers, why not give it a shot?

Burgers look always better in adversity photos than real burger that you got after order. But taste is more important :)
Haha yes they definitely use the best lighting and stuff when taking ad photos. But as long as it tastes good it's okay

I always find their Specials pricey - sometimes, not even good. It is all marketing ploy trying to cash in on the so-called 'Specials'. I might give the ha cheong gai (drumbsticks) a try if I have a sudden craving for it. :-)
True, they definitely use the 'limited time only' tactic a lot. Some of their specials are hit and miss for me too so I only try a few like the nasi lemak burger
