Homemade Hungarian Cottage Cheese (Turo)

in #food2 days ago

Good Morning!

Temperatures been dropping since yesterday, to -23 C, cold days are coming, real Winter is finally here, as oppose to snowing, melting, snowing, melting. We've had that since beginning of October, so annoying as everything icy and crazy 😅 But yeah it's been snowing hard since last week and now we are seeing the start of - 20 C to below.

The other time, my mother in law said how she wished there was turo in Canada, as we wanted to make my boys Turogomboc, a dessert from Hungary. Turo is translated to cottage cheese, however it is more to farmers cheese rather than the cottage cheese that you can find in North America. My husband informed her that I make my own turo, to her disbelief 😁

So yep. I did. I made her a batch 😊

4 L 3.25% milk
1 L 3.25% buttermilk

Pour both milks in to a oven proof pot, let stand, covered, overnight on kitchen counter

Next day, take off lid, place the pot inside the oven, and cook milks at 200 F for 6-8 H
Lay cheesecloth on a strainer, place the strainer on a large bowl, pour mixture and let stand until no drips

Place cheese into a container and store in the fridge until ready to use 😊
