Hi Steemonians, especially those with the green fingers.
We are trying to assist our grandparents in their little 'veggie patch', and there is a melon that is looking like it could be something good, but were not sure if its worthwhile nourishing and taking care of, since it is taking over the whole garden!
In little less than 3 weeks this plant has crept all over the veggie patch with a few melons here and there.
In Africa we have a wild melon called Maketaan, which is quite bitter to the taste (unless made into jam). Were not really interested in having this sort of floor space taken up on a Maketaan.
Please take note this is NOT a professional garden, but a little place that the folks are trying to get going in their retirement.
So is there anyone that can assist? There are some more pics below to assist.
And then just for fun, I've included a pic of a little visitor that was on the plant :)
This is an ordinary watermelon. In my summer in the garden grow the same. Must reach a weight of 5 or more kilograms (up to 11 kilograms). They love the sun, moisture, warmth and black earth.
Thank you....I sure hope it is. Would be great to eat one out our garden
@towjam, the garden food is the best food. With natural fertilisers, of course. :P Happy to see more people on steemit who are interested in gardening.
Interested, but not very good yet :)
Time brings the positive result. :)
Im counting on it. There are some things I will improve on as I go, but it feels good to be productive like this

It looks like a watermelon of some kind, but it looks as it it has cross pollinatinated. When you are ready to harvest, the inside may give you more clues as to what it is. Look good though!
Hi, yes I hope so too!! This is growing like a weed so I sure hope its a sweet watermelon....fingers crossed
I have no idea about the melon. Your photography is incredible! Wow!
Nice of you to help your grandparents in the garde. 🐓🐓
Thank you. You know to be honest, it seems that this helping is going to turn into taking over the garden....they're only too happy to leave it to the young'uns. If so, then that garden is getting a makeover!
It seems to be some kind of watermelon. Here’s what you do. Trim it back, don’t let it take over any more of your garden patch then you are willing to give it. That way it will put more energy into the existing melons and they will be twice as good. If they are good save some seeds and plant again next year. If not you didn’t waste a lot of garden space.
YES! That was my initial reaction. Just remember however that were dealing with politics here....nothing serious, but when you're dealing with your father in laws garden, who doesnt want to trim ANYTHING, it makes for interesting times. But I'm going to say you're a professional and suggested this to be done....then start snipping!!
Father-in-law oh..... well good luck my friend lol!
Ah you understand then! Thank you :)
