Hello Stemians, today I bring you a homemade Pan de jamón (Ham bread) recipe, is a typical Christmas bread in my country (Venezuela). The recipe is explained step by step.

Ingredients:

  • 7 ounce sugar (1)
  • 6 1/3 cups wheat flour (2)
  • 2 tablespoons yeast (3)
  • 2 eggs (4)
  • 1 cup warm water (5)
  • ¾ cups butter or margarine (6)
  • 1 tablespoon salt (7)
  • 1 cup of milk
  • Ham, fried bacon, raisins and green olives (to fill the bread)

Steps:

Step 1:

Use a bowl to dissolve yeast with the cup of warm water. Add to spoons of sugar and beat. Leave to stand during 15 minutes to ferment

Step 2:

In a large bowl, add all the wheat flour, the result of step 1, salt, butter, one egg, the cup of milk and the rest of the sugar. Mix everything and knead all the ingredients until you get a soft dough. If you notice that the dough isn’t soft, add a little water until you get a soft dough

Step 3:

Cover and let the dough (result of step 2) rise during 40 minutes.

Step 4:

With the ingredients shown in this recipe, you can prepared 4 Panes de Jamon (Ham bread). Therefore, after 40 minutes, turn onto a lightly floured surface and divide dough into four parts

Step 5:

Each dough obtained is kneaded again for about 10 minutes. Then spread dough with the help of a Rolling pin

Step 6:

Add the ingredients you want to fill the bread, the most common are: ham, fried bacon, raisins and green olives (in this case I only added ham and fried bacon, as you can see in the picture). Then you roll the bread

Step 7:

Place the breads in a greased loaf pan.

With the other egg (the recipe has 2 eggs and you already use one in Step 2), only use the egg yolk part, scramble it and spread the top of every bread with that.

Cover the loaf pan and let the breads rise during 45 minutes

Finally, bake at 350- 375° during 40 minutes or until golden Brown

Bon Appétit!
