You know the way cravings are: you're sitting down and you suddenly want to eat chocolates for example. You know if you don't satisfy the craving, it will soon consume you and you won't think about something else until the craving is satisfied.
Food cravings are not fully understood but there are certain psychological benefits to giving in as long as you don't over do it. Some cravings depending on the food stabilize our mood, lifts up our spirits and calms our nerves. Chocolates and other fatty carbohydrate rich foods trigger the production of more serotonin which sends signals between our nerves and cells. Research has also shown that indulging in sweet and fatty foods triggers endorphin release. Endorphin are brain chemicals that help us feel calm.
If our food cravings are out of control causing us to overindulge, it's a problem. Cravings are a problem if they make you overeat regularly it should be controlled.
Cravings can be controlled. One can try to distract oneself until the urge goes away. Another way is to exercise since exercise releases the same feel good brain chemicals that chocolates for instance release. If they are due to real Hunger, one can try to make sure to eat three full balanced meals everyday within four hours of each other and can be supplemented with planned snacks. Overall, contentment should be acquired .
