This past weekend was filled with double the joy! My son and daughter came to visit me in Pampanga, and we had a blast catching up, reminiscing, and of course, indulging in some delicious Kapampangan cuisine. As a Kapampangan myself, I always love sharing the unique flavors of our region with my kids. This time around, we embarked on a culinary adventure that involved a dish that might raise some eyebrows: Betute Tugak!
For those unfamiliar, Betute Tugak translates to "tadpole frog" in Kapampangan. It's a whole frog, cleaned and stuffed with a savory minced pork filling, then deep-fried to crispy perfection. The name comes from the plump, almost comical appearance of the stuffed frog.
I know frog legs might not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those open to exploring new and local flavors, Betute Tugak is a must-try. The frog meat itself has a mild flavor, often compared to chicken, and the real star is the flavorful pork stuffing, which adds a delicious savory punch.
We found ourselves at a safari-themed restaurant in Clark, and the adventurous atmosphere definitely added to the experience. My son and daughter, ever the adventurous eaters, were game to try this Kapampangan specialty. Let me tell you, the look on their faces when the golden brown frog arrived at our table was priceless!
But the apprehension quickly turned to delight. We dug in, sharing bites and laughter as we savored the unique flavors. It was a fun and memorable way to bond over our shared heritage and love for good food.
Finding Betute Tugak outside of Pampanga can be a challenge, so consider yourself lucky if you stumble upon it on a menu. This experience has definitely sparked my curiosity for exploring even more Kapampangan dishes with my kids.
