New signing Virgil van Dijk was the hero for Liverpool as he scored a dramatic late winner on his Liverpool debut against city rivals Everton in the FA Cup.
It was Van Dijk's first goal in any competition since scoring in last season's FA Cup third round for Southampton. And with it, he has already repaid a bit of the £75m transfer fee Liverpool paid for him.
It was a cagy affair, and in the first half Everton showed as much promise as Liverpool, but there wasn’t many chances at either end of the pitch, but as in all Merseyside derbies, tempers were flaring.
James Milner went the closest half way through the first half. A Joe Gomez cross was met first time, but Milner’s volley went wide of the post. Just ten minutes later, Milner put the home side ahead.
Adam Lallana was causing problems in the penalty area and the referee blew for a penalty after he judged Holgate to be holding the England midfielder. Milner stepped up and slotted away the penalty.
In the second half, Liverpool took more control of the game, and should have scored a couple, but Joe Gomez and Van Dijk both missed good headed chances.
Liverpool were starting to dominate, but as always when you’re only one up, a fragile lead is easily squandered. A counter from Everton saw Sigurdsson score a with great strike from the edge of the area.
And just as it seemed Liverpool had blown their chance up stepped new signing Virgil van Dijk. With only five minutes remaining, the £75m defender headed home to send the home crowd into a state of ecstacy.
It was the least Liverpool deserved, but how their fragile defence came oh so close to blowing another winning start.

Stuff dreams are made of
Sure is!
What a great signing he was. Always wanted him at Chelsea.
he is fantastic player...
Is he worth £75 million though?
The penalty was very soft but the winning header was quality. Pickford unfortunately at fault.
Yeah!
the price of a player is a tremendous psychological problem, players will not admit it but in their depressed hearts, the goal is enough to calm the fans this week
We will see
