Croatia is experiencing a significant increase in foreign workers, particularly in sectors such as construction, tourism, and hospitality. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the number of residence and work permits issued has been steadily rising, with 171,000 permits issued this year, though not all have been utilized, resulting in approximately 120,000 foreign workers currently residing in the country.
However, these workers often face challenges, including unpaid or reduced wages, forced overtime without adequate rest, and threats from employers. Instances of physical assaults and theft have also been reported.
Despite these issues, foreign workers constitute about eight percent of Croatia's total workforce, and their presence has not led to a decrease in average wages, which continue to rise.
