Bitcoin-Forks - latest overview - forking dates, block heights, distribution ratios, official homepages

in #forks7 years ago (edited)

All you need to know about the recent and upcoming Bitcoin hard forks.

Some love them and regard them as free money and dividends. Some hate them and fear that they will harm the cryptocurrency ecosystem in the long run. And some do not even care as most of them will be probably worthless.

The present article will provide an overview of all the current and upcoming Bitcoin hardforks that have created / will create a snapshot of the existing Bitcoin blockchain and thus will also replicate Bitcoin holdings according to a certain distribution ratio in the new chain.

To have access to the new coins, you typically need to have access to the private key (holding your Bitcoins in a paper wallet, software wallet or a hardware wallet - but not on an exchange). In some cases, the exchanges have credited their users with new coins (e.g. Binance), but this was not done consistently for all coins so far. So better be safe and know your private keys.

In the following table, you will find the main information about the hard forks (name, abbreviation, forking date, block height of fork, distribution ratio). Furthermore, I will provide you with the official homepages where you can read up on the specifics. I have compiled the table to the best of my knowledge and belief. Please post if you find that something is not accurate.

This post is so helpful to know. Do you know which best exchanges to follow for transactions, or the exchanges not to follow and process transactions?. I am currently using Coinpayments, Bitstamps, for multiple cryptocurrencies, and coinbase and blockchains for others.

Thank you
followed, updated, and resteemed.

All support is greatly appreciated.@share4angels

It might also be a good solution to store your bitcoins in a paper wallet or a hardware wallet (such as Ledger or Trezor). That way, Ledger or Trezor might program a splitting tool and might enable you to get the coins easily. And if not, you still have the possibility to extract your private key. Although I would not recommend doing this (extracting your private keys of the hardware wallets) because of security reasons.

Hey, so far, I have only heard of Kucoin. They announced that they will support all the upcoming forks, at least it is stated here: https://news.kucoin.com/en/announcement-regarding-ethereum-fog-and-other-fork-coins/
However, this is only helpful for the upcoming forks.
Also Binance (https://www.binance.com) had supported some of the forks (e.g. Bitcoin Diamond, BitcoinX), but not all of them.

It's interesting that there will be so many forks for BTC in January 2018. This is too much for the average person to keep up with considering how many other cryptocurrencies there are out there to research.

You are right! It is way too much. If you really want to keep up, you have to keep track of them all. Some of them might not be legit. I have not included Bitcoin Platinum and Bitcoin Uranium in the list, because it seems as if these hard forks have never even taken place.
Also, when claiming the forked coins, it is important to watch out for replay protection, otherwise your bitcoins can be gone forever...

This looks like a zoo to me. Bastard offsprings and mutated versions everywhere. I'd be careful with my private keys though, some might be scams. If you have to enter your key at a website to get the mutant coin, think twice or better 10 times before you do it.

you are right! many of them might not be trustworthy. I would recommend moving your bitcoins to another address (resulting in another private key for the bitcoins) before using the private key of the forked coins.

Good advice 👍
Many of these are garbage cash grabs!
Some are definitely legit but be safe people!

only time will tell which ones are here to stay and which are not.

Here is also an interesting post of Jimmy Song regarding Bitcoin Diamond, SuperBitcoin and BitcoinX that might be interesting:

Yeah, my first Steemit-Post with a table and a picture I made myself! :) Unfortunately the links are not fully shown (at least in my browser), but they are working at least. :)

Which hard forks have you already claimed?

Only the BCH.
Would you know which exchanges are going to support these forks?

If you are holding your private key, you don't need an exchange. All you need is a reputable and trustworthy software wallet of the new coins. But beware of scammers! It might be good to move Bitcoin to another address first...

Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold. That's it.

Those are the two most supported so far.
