Drivers soon realised more care was needed and to pay careful attention to the wind.
I stayed up last night to watch the qualifying of the Japanese Grand Prix and to wait for news to see if the rugby game between japan and Scotland would go ahead today. The way the weather channels predicted you would have thought the world was coming to an end. The Sumida river burst it's banks causing flooding but to be honest that would have been expected with the amount of rain that was forecast over a short period of time. Looking at the Grand Prix circuit bathed in sunshine you would never have guessed what went down the day before.

Drivers kept themselves busy keeping their mind of what was happening outside on Saturday and Grosjean built a model racing car to pass the time.

Finished in one day and he must have had help from others as it would take me weeks to build that.

Kubica was literally blown sideways into the barriers and the team had 3 hours to rebuild his car including replacing the chassis.
The Grand Prix qualifying had two crashes right from the start as the drivers were caught out by the blustery conditions. It looked like Kevin Magnussen's crash was caused by a very strong tail wind and Kubica's one was caused by a cross wind. At this point the main teams hadn't gone out yet and were watching from the pits. Looking at what was going on the down force on the cars was going to be more crucial than ever. Vettel came out on top giving Ferrari a one two for the start of the race later on. It made a lot of sense to have qualifying and the race all on the same day and maybe something that can happen in the future. teams are used to pressure and rebuilding a car is possible in a matter of hours.

The Canadians had their game cancelled with Namibia and though disappointed they have been helping the locals cleaning up a fan park for the televised Japan vs Scotland game later today. Some good PR for the team helping everyone doing their bit to get everything back to normal. People did lose their lives unfortunately and it was a big storm, but not as catastrophic as what we all expected.
The natural disasters and it's influence on sports sometimes can be a little painful, in our local football stadiums rainfall has flooded by pitches but the thought of people losing their lives is really disheartening

So the weather impacted the rugby games but not the race? I guess Japan is much bigger than I had originally thought. I know that my mom and dad were going to watch a race that was on TV yesterday. I think it was something NASCAR related though. I feel like those cars would take off like planes if the winds were just right.
