I prefer that you feel the way you do, rather than you did not care, so it is okay.
The reason I mentioned that the characters affected me was that after I felt I had written enough to achieve (I hoped) an opening of empathy for kids, I turned the story into a sf+fantasy tale...which is why I have been able to continue writing for so many pages.
As for why the world is changed so much for the worse, I suspect I know why.
Look at Bill Gates, he poses with a little Indian girl on his lap and he is smiling sweetly at her as he injects her with a vaccine which the Indian government found out is experimental and can cause cancer in kids - while also sterilising them. It was why his organisation and the WHO have been banned.
My point is, he can smle at her as he destroys her life, because he does not consider her fully human. (Try pointing out that his daughter is also just as much 'not human' and he'll fly into a rage.)
Think of this possibility: You are what is self-considered an Elite and you are (directly or indirectly) a part of the Depopulation plan. So, out of 7.5 billion people, only half a billion are to be allowed to live
I believe that if they succeed, they will fail, for there is no way it will not affect them psychologically. Just look at what the inherited guilt of the Germans is doing to them.
In the meantime though, to be capable of carrying out the plan, it means they must be capable of thinking of the bulk of humanity as being less than human. That means they look at children the same way, plus they probably feel they have the justification of treating them as they will, since the kids will soon be dead anyway.
I'm not saying I know any of the above. I have tried to understand how it is possible for any human being to become like them and the above scenario was all I could think of.
I hear you: sociopathy, and psychopathy might be reasons why too. Most people cannot comprehend those conditions because they've always had the ability for empathy, and have never considered the world without it. I don't consider myself as an elite, so I'm not sure how I left that impression with you.
I reread all I wrote and cannot see where I could have given you the impression I think of you as an elite....
My last comment about them - are you aware that most of the leaders in Europe (especially in the EU) do not have children? I hate to think what Junkers and Merkel are like in real life - even T May does not have any children, which means they do not feel the need to leave a world their children can live in. That fact alone tells me they are not at the top of the food chain.

It's probably better some of those politicians aren't having kids. They'd just end up screwing them up in the head anyways.
The true elites have their D.U.M.B.s, private garden plantations, seed vaults, and contingency plants for when the SHTF. Then if they start a nuclear war or whatever they can all play their game of highlander against each other in their underground caves.
They thought resources were a concern top side, imagine how they would act towards each other stuck underground for centuries. They probably would last 10 years without trying to kill, and steal from each other.

As for the kids of the Cabal, I have read that many of them take drugs and drink too much, going from party to party. As you say, they will not be enjoying life later on, so maybe it is good that they are being turned into wastrels. The less tight the discipline, the faster they'll collapse.
I just hope we can avoid allowing things to get to that point. Being in my mid seventies means I am less likely to be around when you guys have to deal with the changes - whichever way things go.

Yet, they could be farming people underground already like in the movie 'the island'.
Yeah I hope so too, it would be a colossal waste if humanity destroyed itself, or made the earth uninhabitable.
But who knows what comes next, this could all be a simulation for all I know. Singularity may have already happened.
This life of mine might just be me, the real me from 2283, simulating some dead guy's life story.
The speed of our technological advancements doesn't seem normal or natural.
It's also bound to get even more radical considering the so-called law of accelerating returns, which may only exist because we're in a simulation. (if we're in a simulation)
My hope is some of the suppressed disruptive technologies will be released in order to make the world a better place.
Maybe that could help to prevent an ELE.
