I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. It's not entirely good for kids to spend their time like this, yet I don't think it's entirely bad, either. My younger brother is a huge fan of all these gaming Youtubers and I used to tell him off for it, but I've never seen him act stupid or show a lack of imagination. Also, I've seen a lot of these games that are on the market, they feed kids with stories, they're more complex than we give them credit for. They're not all negative.
Sure, there are ways in which you can waste your time online and become a zombie, like you say, but not all of them lead there. And I really think it depends a lot on the kid.
I get what you're saying. I had cartoons growing up, but that was about it. No phones, no computers etc. and I did spend a huge amount of time making up stories in my head and with my toys. So I get it.
But, I've seen kids my age who've grown into little Imstagram addicted zombies, just like I've seen people in their forties and fifties who get bored on their own and really don't know how to use their imagination and don't feel good by themselves. THey need outside entertainments, reassurance etc.
So, the generation from 40 years ago was divided into people who knew how to get creative and people who did not (don't, as adults, at the very least). same goes for my own generation and I don't have a doubt it's going to be the same for the next generation...

The feed is the issue i have issue with. They are consumptive, not creative and there is very little room for imagination to fill a void as the scene is already full.
