I guess people in Japan realize that it is crazy to have more than one or two kids. As a parent you have to provide for your kid and look after them. Becomes much harder if you have five or six kids...

In an industrialized urban setting children are a liability, in an agrarian setting children are an asset. In Japan children are very expensive liabilities, in other places they are free labor. Of course if you don't have enough children who will be there to look after you when you are old?
