Everybody who's now our friend was once a stranger to us. I met my friends for the first time around the neighborhood, some in school, at the office, at a social gathering. I liked them, they liked me as well. They could see things from my perspective.
I could remember walking up to this keyboardist I met at a concert and I was like "Hi Joel (I'd been following him up on Facebook), you're looking at your new friend Christian".
He laughed, and we exchanged contacts. We've been very good friends since then, having similar interests like music and video games especially. We play PlayStation4 every Sunday, either at his place or at mine.
Now, Joel has been one of the best keyboardists in my city and lately, he's been asking at concerts that I play alongside him. He now sees me as one of the bests too, even when I know I'm not. It's what friendship does, it covers your flaws. It makes you see people for what they are exactly not. Friendship is magical.
As good as everything seems in friendship, I hate to ruin it but there are also strange truths we should tell ourselves.
1. Your Friend Doesn't Actually Want You To Progress Past Him/Her
"I'm happy for you" is a common phrase amongst friends. It's a genuine happiness initially. However, when it comes to progressing past your friends, happiness becomes inverse, especially among femals. Someone once said, "Males shouldn't be jealous, that's a female trait". A 2005 study showed that females indeed were more jealous people than males though, but it didn't show that men weren't jealous people. We all are and the truth is that despite the fact that your friends wish you well, they don't love you more than they love themselves and wouldn't be pleased when you make it past their bounds.
2. Your Friend Doesn't Actually Want You To Have A Closer Pal
Years back when I was still in high school, I had this friend Caleb. I liked him and everything we did together until Melissa came along and stole my friend slowly. In the picture above, I was the person in the glass house.
Caleb seemed a little happier with her than he was with me and I was jealous. My dreams turned into nightmares when they started to date. Nothing lasts forever though, they broke up and I remember comforting Melissa when she cried but being happy on the inside of me, I wished for nothing more. Every true friend is like this, funny but true.
3. Your Friends Often Take You For Granted
They don't mean to be like this but it's a natural phenomenon. When someone gets too close, the person tends to overlook your worth. Family is worse when it comes to this. While at least your friends think you're cool, family often takes you for a jerk. Why wouldn't they? They watched you grow from a baby to this. They've watched you all your life and to some of them, you're still that baby they carried while he was little, you're still that little boy to them.
Now, while the rest of the world see you to be great, your friends would always look down at you (not on purpose). If your friend hasn't ever asked you "What's up fool?", then I'm sorry but you have no real friend. A real friend would always pick on you at the slightest opportunity he gets.
What's your take on these things? Please share your opinion with the rest of us in comments.
You are very right...great observations...interesting
Thank you, I'm glad you see with me.
100% fact...nice post!!!
Thank you.
Friendship is way beyond imagination. If you have a good friend, they will want you to succeed and also look out for you.
It takes maturity and tolerance to put up with all the problems in friendship. Well, you made some very good observations
Yes, thank you.
I think you're wrong in all ramifications, maybe you're writing this from a jilted or dumped relationship that just ended, just rant it you'll earn money for that even, the point is you did not have a good friend, A good friend negates all your preposition.
I don't think you're seeing this from the right perspective.
This is so true!!
Lately, I have been in that space where I wonder what I actually need friends for.
Some friendships are very great though.
Some, yes of course.
