Fruits and Veggies Monday - Addictive Carrot Pulling And Funky Fine Kohlrabi

in #fruitsandveggiesmonday7 years ago (edited)

I got back from a run yesterday and went straight to the garden in my backyard, where I like to put the breaks on my sweat downpour before I head inside the house. All of the carrot tops were huge but I didn't see much of any actual 'carrot' sticking above the soil so I was thinking I needed to wait a few more weeks.

But the mystery of what lies beneath - I just couldn't shake it.

So I grabbed a handful of greens and pulled just one carrot up.

It was a Deep Red Beauty for my eyes to see. I couldn't believe it!

Then I thought I'd pull just one more, because surely this is the only one that's ready.

Wrong!! Another beefy beauty!

Then I couldn't help myself and pulled them all up! All of them! Even the ones that were not even close! I literally could not stop myself. I snapped a few photos with my iPhone.

It was like I was playing the slot machines just hoping to land a winner.

The result was a beautiful bunch of rainbow carrots, some big, some medium, some tiny, some with 2 legs, some twisty, some curvy, some slender, some beefy. ALL FABULOUS!!

Also I can't make this post without giving a nod to that kohlrabi there looking so funky fine. Gonna eat you soon buddies.

Wish I could have my hands on these carrots @jaymorebeet! What a lovely dish we can make with these! Wow! Your shots amazing as usual!

Thanks @progressivechef! Now the only problem is choosing what to make! So many possobilities!!

Kohlrabi is funky looking and I love your colorful carrots! great gardening adventure!

Thanks @lrich! I was pleasantly surprised!

OMG - how wonderful.

I love all those colors!! I've already got their spot planted up with seeds :)

Looking awesome @jaymorebeet !!! And quite delicious too👨‍🍳

Thanks @beyondmountains!! I gotta get cooking apparently!

What a fabulous entry, thank you so much. I love these carrots, they are not only beautiful, but also very yummy. Oh and kohlrabi wow.............I grew up eating it from my grandmother's garden. It's not the same from a supermarket. Must be so nice to have a garden like this. UPV & RSD

Thanks @lenasveganliving! I only learned about kohlrabi as an adult through a CSA I was part of, but I'm glad I did because it's so yummy AND it looks pretty neat in the garden :)

Not too many people knows kohlrabi , at least here in Canada, so I am glad you like it. And yes it does look nice in the garden. We also had purple and they looked wonderful next to the green.

Very colourful :))

The packet of seeds was called "rainbow mix". I guess it earned it's name!

Beautiful Carrots!

They sure are! Thanks @whitedove!

So why is it that we typically see only orange carrots in the supermarket? Hmmm.

Don't get me started!! It's ridiculous what a beauty contest we put our produce through to make it into the grocery store!

I tried to grow multicolored carrots like that last year but none of them survived my cats deciding my garden would make a lovely litter box! I love the different colors. I've never seen carrots like that in person.

Oh those naughty kitties! I made my raised beds completely critter proof because I was so tired of planting seeds to have squirrels and neighborhood cats and whatever else rifle through! No issues since!!

My cats are a determined bunch. I have raised beds this year. The cats kept tearing down my fencing or jumping over so I was reduced to this...wood pallet and planks in between all the tomato plants lol. Only thing that's worked.

Oh no this is so sad, so so sad. Those rambunctious cats!! If you want I'll put up a photo or two of my raised beds. They are fort knox.

Oh that would be nice to see. My cats are my biggest challenge. Right now I've got a bucket garden going so they can't mess with those and my pallet "fence."

K here's a link to a post with a video I did a while back about one of the two beds: post. Here's a photo of it too:

I'll snap a photo of the other one tomorrow when it's light out so you can see that one. It's mostly just wood and screws and hardware cloth. :)

That is the coolest cage! I bookmarked it. I love how it opens up. My house is on the side of a mountain surrounded by woods on all sides. This would help in the future when we expand our garden to keep out the raccoons and possums. Thanks for the amazing post to show how you did it.
