Apartments in good neighborhoods in Manhattan are much much more than that for one bedroom. Maybe it depends, but it anchors around $3000-$3500. (Source: I lived there :))

thats absolutely out of control, thats why so many new yorkers i know have moved to different parts of europe, less crime, less rent and more beauty haha
It's also expensive outside of Manhattan. It's really nuts; you have to chase money to live there. Same thing in SF. I don't know how it is now, but where I grew up in Brooklyn, you could potentially get a lot more for less. You have to specifically avoid like Williamsburg or Park Slope.
