This would have been a clue. Usually, when someone is forcing their (sexist) agenda explicitly in the design of the work, you can expect problems. See: Ghostbusters, potentially Star Trek:Discovery.
Personally I don't think this was a gender thing. It was a bad writing and bad animation thing. These were all major and exciting characters from the shows and movies. With proper writing and animation, I think they would have been awesome. The last one was actually pretty good.
