Robophobic Authoritarians: laws for sex robots

This is funny and sad all at the same time. Funny as it is conceivable that the prostitution industry will also suffer job losses due to automation in 10 years, who would of thought. No worries mate, universal payments will look after everyone. Also not only workers will be obselete but relationships too. I will have to consider a career in robotics.

Technocratic Society

It is sad that societies love for technology, surpass it's love for their own species. However I think sex robots are a great idea for people; relationships with real people are highly overrated, with dubious benefits for most people. Some lucky people find the right partner and that is great, but quite a lot don't and go on to lead miserable lives. Sex robots could reduce suicide.

Sex robots will provide the freedom to allow people to really pursue that career in.... ...well nothing because whatever it is, a robot will do it. Nobody has yet been able to explain how the utopian dream will actually work, where labour is done by robots and humans will spend their time pursuing leisure. Perhaps we can develop a robot to make an assessment of what resources you require and that will be what you get paid.

Enter The Authoritarian Bullies

It is interesting to note the moral outrage has spurred the call for legislating sex robots, now that they are becoming viable. Nobody gave a shit while robots were developed for killing other people. No moral qualms there. Nobody gave shit about robots that clean rooms, roomba's suck too you know. Why should legislation be put in place on the basis of what is being sucked?

Four Questions

Let me know what you think about sex robots, do you envisage a time that sex robots are an option for people? Nobody can deny the exponential rate of advance in technology.

What do you think the social impact will be?

Do you even care, if so, why?

Is this the end of the human race?

Wow follow me

Yeah thats not how it works

Interesting topic. I would hope that sex robots would provide an avenue for those perverts in our society to get their kicks off without actually doing any harm to women. It could, however, be a double edged sword, creating a surge in offenders who just can't get their kicks with he metallic feel of a robot and a surge in crime could be the side effect?

It is an interesting concept to ponder though. Thanks for igniting my thought pattern!

I was wondering if anyone would bother seeking a real person and whether people would develop fetishes for non sexualised appliances? A toaster perhaps? I remember reading about a guy who liked to have sex with vehicles. I would want anybody to have non-consensual sex with my vehicle.

Great post, upvoted!

  • Sex robots could cure over-population by diverting the focus of sex reducing the birth rate.
  • Sex robots could liberate people working in the sex industry to being employed to monitor, clean, and repair (endless tech possibilities away from being forced to perform sex acts)
  • Using various robot designs might reduce rape and other sexual crimes
  • Sex robots could create new fetishes in a seemingly never-ending industry of perversion

I'm sure how much they would enjoy monitoring and maintaining robots, compared to what they usually do. I heard that some European prostitutes complained and shut down the first robot brothel in Europe (stealing business), not sure if that was true. It may reduce rape, but ill be worried about sombody taking advantage of the coffee machine, then demanding a cappuccino when they are done.

That's a fair point I guess it depends if people assume they're losing their jobs they're not going to think they're being "liberated". But people take comfort in steady employment and dislike change so I think it depends on your worldview in order to define the good or bad of the situation. Yeah like should/could a machine have rights types of argument?

Yeah that's what the lady in tue video was eluding to. How do we "treat" machines.

In terms of of the morality of how we treat machines it's really unexplored territory. Asimov's Laws really only cover the machine's behaviour and trying to teach people to see it as anything more than a tool to be used (literally) is going to be pretty difficult. Movies like to imagine what such interaction would look like but when it's done in private I think the results are going to be different to what Hollywood has in mind. But I still think it's a good thing towards combating overpopulation.

There are a few things that are working towards reducing over population. Japan are having a population crisis as the population ages and dies off there is little interest in starting families and having children with the young people for instance. I think you are right, that people will just not bother with having kids and sex robots will exacerbate this. I dont see it as bad or good, just interesting to observe

Japan is just about the only country with a population issue; but, holistically speaking, the entire globe is over populated so Japan might represent a return to a more sustainable mean. Definitely it's neither good nor bad but just a change. More to the point, raising the standard of living generally lowers the birth rate anyway as women become empower and seek employment over families etc. This might just be another element of the wider issue.
