On the map it looks like a mistake. Infact it was a mistake, made in 1783 in the Treaty of Paris. The border, being drawn between the US and Britain was supposed to cut through the lake of the woods at a north west angle, hence the name. The map used was completely wrong. The only way to travel to the Angle, as the locals call it, is through Canada.

There is no fence, no guard or sign of any human activity until you come across a point called Jim's corner for arriving passengers to check in with US immigration.

Most of the people who live here are into fishing. The locals here face many problems. For example, for grocery shopping they have to crossover to the US as there are no grocery stores on the stretch between the Angle and the US border. For this, they have to inform the custom authorities every time. Infact there is no cinema hall or even a mall on that stretch. The locals are able to do it only once a week as it's very time consuming.

One third of the population here goes to Angle Inlet School which also happens to be Minnesota's last school. Even for a small slumber party, the girls need to have a passport to come up to the Angle. As they are kids, they don't possess one.

As funny as it may sound, Angle residents tried to make the area a part of Canada and threatened to leave the US over a fishing dispute. The fish caught on the Canadian side could not be brought back to Us side.
In conclusion , the area is quite, serene and remote. It might seem like an orphan on the atlas but that's just the way the folks at the top of the nation like it.
