Is Steem a social blockchain, or a serious, journalistic blockchain? Which has more value to people outside of Steem?
I think that this will be differentiated by app soon. The catchall of Steemit doesn't do anyone any favours.

Agreed. I do find myself coming back to Steemit quite often. But that's because of the blogs I follow.
The more it supports our interests (and lives later) the more we will return until it is natural and integrated into daily action.
