What Remains of Edith Finch Review

in #game7 years ago

At first I wasnt sure I was going to like What Remains of Edith Finch. I am not the biggest walking simulator fan and wasnt impressed by other games that had similar mechanics, but ultimately I was enchanted by this game and it now sits firmly at one of my favorites.

What Remains of Edith Finch follows Edith as she explores her old house and tries to uncover the supposed curse that has been put on her family. Her house is no ordinary house though, it is essentially a giant tree fort with everything from secret passageways to hidden rooms. The setting of the game alone makes it worth playing as you wander around this beautifully created home and interact with your surroundings.

The bulk of the gameplay is when you are looking back at the lives of many of the Finches who have passed away at varying ages. You experience their stories and are accompanied by beautifully animated mini games that make progressing through the game feel natural, but also enjoyable. As you get closer and closer to the end you cant stop playing because you want to find out more.

The whole point of Edith's journey back into the old house is to try to discover if there is such thing as the Finch curse and having not been to her old house in years, Edith looks at things with a fresh set of adult eyes. This is part of the magic of this game as you see a character not only rediscover her childhood, but question what was real and what wasnt.

I dont want to spoil too much more, but this game was definitely worth the time played and I was captured by the imagination of the developers. I would say that the only negative thing about this game would be the $20 price tag, only because the game is very short. It is still a great deal compared to other things but a savvy purchaser could get a game to last them a week, while Edith Finch would only last them a night. However if you see it on sale or the price doesnt matter to you much, this is a must play!

I've heard great things about this. I think it's best to treat these shorter, narrative-based experiences in a similar way to seeing a film at the cinemas.

Exactly, its definitely like a film that is a tad bit on the long end. You need to figure out if the price is worth it for you.

Game was stellar, rated it 5/5 myself but I agree there were some technical issues.

Had a hilarious game-breaking bug in the snake section close to the start where I flew off into the air. Also had freezing issues and FPS dropped which made me restart the application on 2 or 3 occasions.

Regardless, this is the best walking simulator ever made. Very, very good story and unique, varied gameplay.

I didnt run into any issues myself but I definitely could see it and I played it at a point where they could probably fixed some of the major ones. It was definitely the best walking simulator ive played and I recommend it to anyone.
