Back Drop Build v5: Thicket gets a little more sticky.

in #gamedev3 months ago (edited)

Intro

Well that was an intense 3 weeks, but we're all the better for it. For those new here, welcome. Feel free to check out our other posts about projects that we're currently working on. You can also check out @bflanagin's blog here as well if you just have to know more about the man behind the video.

For the last 3 weeks we set out to create the needed backend to re-imagine the arcade experience from the ground up,and it doesn't stop after the sprint is done. On the contrary we plan on release new features and finishing out those that we already have. Below is a very quick overview of what's going on.

Arcade Machine UI

This is slowly becoming our "look" as we slowly move away from some of our older designs for Thicket. The design is meant to give owners an at a glance diagnostic of their machines as well as a easy to look at interface for the players.

We're not sure if backdrop build v6 or 7 will have us fleshing out this interface, but for now it's at least kinetic. (not that you guys can see it in the png)

Background service

Thicket-service is a daemon that resides on the machine and handles the backend processes that could otherwise interfere with the player. This includes diagnostics as well as software and money management. Imagine a machine that can conform to the needs of the games or the arcade. Need to change out the fighting rig with a racing setup? Just buy the racing control module and plug it in. Not only will the service handle remapping inputs but will disable any game that can't be played on the new inputs. Want to take HBD as a payment or some other form of currency? Why not! Anything that has been designed to work with our system will be supported by the service.

Management

The management software is shaping up nicely, with the ability to control the devices that are running the service the shop owner will be able to create entirely new ways to bring in patrons, and with the ability, through the SDK, to make games feel like first class citizens of the platform indie developers and shop owners will rejoice at the ways they can work together for a brighter and more profitable future.

SDK

The bread and butter of any platform the SDK is the key to bringing in new games and having them appear on the store for owners to purchase. With both self regulated rating systems and our own in house QA team (coming soon, hopefully) We will vet every game that is on the platform and help guide them to something amazing.
