HBO says No to G.O.T. "Spinoff".. [Thank God!]

While most people are still reeling from the Game of Thrones series finale that aired this past Sunday, many people are ready to move on.

Obviously everyone is gossiping about the ending, and some fans are already speculating what might be in store for HBO's version of G.O.T. in the near future. Although many prequels to the series are confirmed to be in production, the chances of seeing one particular character again has officially been shot down.

** This post contains information about the fate of certain characters on the show, if you are not up to speed, beware of SPOILERS!! **

After 8 seasons, the HBO Game of Thrones series remains as divisive as ever. On one end, many fans were quick to come to the defence of the showrunners and their directing. Yet, in the opposite camp, over a million disgruntled viewers have passed around a petition to remake the last season "with competent writers.". To say the reactions are mixed would be an understatement.

However, there is one character that managed to survive the critic and dragon fire whom I'm sure most fans would rally behind.

As episode 6 comes to a close, we can see Arya, alive and well, sailing off to find out what's west of Westeros. The youngest Stark girl is a fan-favorite to many. The internet was on fire after she took out one of the greatest threats to humanity, the Knight King, with a Valerian steel dagger to the heart. Many even believed that she would use some of her ninja magic, which she learned from the Faceless men, to take out Queen Cersei.

Alas, over the final couple of episodes Arya didn't do anything particularly spectacular... So, when she was last seen sailing westward, rumors of an Arya-Spinoff were abound. Even Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the actor who played Jaime Lannister on the show, posted an Instagram video saying that perhaps fans should start a petition to HBO to get Maisie Williams a "West of Westeros" show.

However, when asked about the chances of that happening HBO said.... Nope. "No Thank you."..
Two days after the show ended, HBO programming president Casey Bloys sat down in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked point blank about an Arya sequel, He retorted.. Fat Chance!..

Here's the full excerpt from the interview:

In the finale, Arya goes on to explore what's west of Westeros. Have you considered exploring sequels? Specifically, Arya Stark as she travels west of Westeros?

Nope, nope, nope. No. Part of it is, I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, Dan and David's show — to be its own thing. I don't want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them off into another world with someone else creating it. I want to let it be the artistic piece they've got. That's one of the reasons why I'm not trying to do the same show over. George has a massive, massive world; there are so many ways in. That's why we're trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and redo the same show. That's probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn't make sense for us.

While this might seem like a stab to the gut for many, I, for one, think it's a good thing. When a show with such a fan base gets to a certain level, it's always going to be impossible to please everyone. Just think about it. If you are already disgruntled with how the writing for the final season did not live up to your expectations, what makes you think it's going to be any better in a sequel?

I am breathing a sigh of relief that they did NOT drag Ayra Stark's character through the mud by trying to keep her story going. Sometimes there comes a time when we just have to say goodbye and leave things as is. I actually really enjoyed the way they ended Arya's story-arc in the show. It was one of the few characters that they paid-off well. Having her going off to explore the unknown seemed to fit logically with how she had grown throughout the show. I thought it romantic...

I am a wanderer at heart and get restless if I stay in one place for too long. I love setting off on grand adventures to wherever the wind may take me. My version of an ideal odyssey is going to be different than yours or any show-writer's.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to have that ideal of one of my favorite characters ruined by the greed of Hollywood and plot lines that fizzle out after carrying on for too long...

But perhaps that's just me. What do you think? Are you crushed that they squashed all hopes of an Arya Sequel? Or do you agree that some things are better left along? Let me know in the comments below!

Until Then...

Sort:

Please no cash cow prequels or sequels. Let great things comes to an end. This is why Seinfeld was so good. No spin offs!!!!!

Seinfeld.. the good old days when shows actually cared about their audience. I keep waiting for show to 1) wrap up nicely and 2) leave it at that. They can't seem to do either of those anymore..
