Magic the Gathering (Dominaria Prerelease) Event Battle Report

in #games7 years ago

I went to the midnight release last night for the newest Magic the Gathering set Dominaria. I haven't really played much magic since the last Ixalan set was released. I was really disappointed with that set and didn't even draft that block even once after going to the prerelease. That set was far too dependent on tribal archetypes and over simplification. They even reprinted cards within the same block... Times have changed with the coming of this new set. Here was my haul, 6 packs of Dominaria, with two promos and three prize packs.

Prereleases are always the best Magic the Gathering event to go to, because it is always packed. I think there was about 80+ people at the prerelease last night, when the store rarely has more than 20 people in it. Everyone comes out of the woodwork to check out the new sets. This set had a lot of hype because the original creator Richard Garfield was involved in the design. The set really feels like the color dynamics are emphasized, like a core set but with advanced rules. Many of the commons are basically vanilla creatures with very marginal abilities that don't trigger often. Overall, I think this set will be fun to draft and has made me interested in paper magic again for the time being.

Dominaria goes back to the original plane, and visits all of the old sets. There is mention of every old set in the title of cards and flavor text. You can find the words "weatherlight" "Onslaught" "beta" in the cards. Go look here at all the cards and see if you can find all the old set names hidden like Easter eggs. http://gatherer.wizards.com I have always loved Fallen Empires (I know hate me), so I wanted to make a Thallid deck. Although I didn't get enough sapproling based cards :(. Here was my deck. I basically made an Esper Air Force deck. Just tons of fliers with decent removal and tricks.

Here is my Air Force. I opened 8 fliers in Blue/White. I opened the 3/3 Legendary multi-color flier. I got the Blue Djinn that has power equal to the number of islands you have (he was a 6/4 at one point in the night). Almost all my fliers has 3 power or higher except for the Pegasus & wind drake reprint (that can be kicked to become a 4/4). So, my fliers won almost every game.

Here are my promo cards. Sorry the image is a little blurry, I was tired at 5AM when I took this. These were pretty decent bombs in my deck. I knew I was definitely going Blue at the start. I considered Red/Blue, but the removal just wasn't there.

I realized real quick that relic runner basically becomes unblock-able every time I made a Historic, and if I copied it I would have a field of unblockables if I could drop a Historic often. At one point I had 4 of these guys copied, dropped a Historic card and swung for the win!

Here was my removal. I didn't have much, but it was all really good removal. I had two cards that could get rid of someone's Sagas, or basically any creature. The look on someones face that loses a Saga card before it hits the third chapter is priceless. I think the Blue Saga is the best one in limited, because it really slows down the opponent. In Bola's Clutches should be a first pick in draft, it's basically a game winner. I stole someone's 7/7 and they scooped.

Here are the honorable mentions that I didn't use in my deck. I got one thallid lord, but no other supporting guys. I want to get 4 and start building a standard thallid deck for fun. I'd also like to get like 30 of the rat that you can have unlimited in a deck for a casual deck. Here are the other legendary guys I pulled and the new Lightning bolt variant that I didn't see anyone use. I never saw Icy Manipulator all night either, but my buddy got wrecked by someone with one.

Here are the rares and foil that I didn't use. I only ended up playing with 1 of the rares I opened (you should never force rares in sealed and focus on the commons and uncommons). I opened a Mox Amber! Basically paid for me going (worth around $34 as I type this). I got a couple dual lands that aren't worth much but always good to have in your box for making decks. I won nearly every game except in the first round where I got overrun by a red aggro deck, then got mana flooded. Ended the night with 2 wins and 1 lose, netting 3 booster packs, which I will open and post to d.tube soon.

Go out and draft this set, if you were disappointed in the last couple sets you will be surprised how good this set is. I'm sure all Local Gaming Stores are holding events all weekend, and next weekend release days will have tons of drafts firing. I returned to Magic too some days ago and boughz five decks :-) its still an amazing game!!!!

Welcome back! Go hit up your local game store and start drafting :)

I'm going to draft this set next Monday. I can't wait!
The Helm of the Hosts is freaking brutal!

I would suggest looking for good White/black in draft or tribal wizards or thallids. That's what I'm gonna do.

Damn, looks like I missed the pre-release, I was going to attend this one too. I may just buy a box to split. Always a loser financially, but the set looks really good. Removal is king in sealed. Looks like you did OK!

Yeah man, that was the most people I've seen at a prerelease in years. Huge turnout. This set is pretty awesome so far. Value isn't quite there yet, but if standard starts getting popular again (like projected) card prices from this set might go up a lot.

This seams like a really strong deck. I also went to prereales and lost only one time. In this game my ennemy was also playing Time of Ice. He droped it on turn 4 and turn 5 he droped icy manipulator. With this combo he bounced me 5 creatures and won.

That sounds brutal. I was so glad I didn't see an opponent with icy manipulator. That is such a strong card in limited!

Fallen Empires was the set when I played MTG most as a kid. I definitely love how much this new set has brought to saporling and fungus tribal.
