Silent hill was an instant hit when it was released in 1999. A psychological horror game unlike anything before.
With Hideo Kojima at the helm, it is actually not that surprising that we got a very twisted and unusual game that explores the human psyche, but can also make you shit yourself at the same time. Are you wearing your brown pants?
Kojima has always had a very... interesting relationship with Konami, and as such, Kojima never really got the freedom he deserved when making his games, but regardless, there have been 8 Silent Hill games, with a few spin off's and HD reworks of the originals. Sadly though, there have been an equal number of cancelled games. Most notably, the recent Silent Hills game that was teased at the end of the P.T. demo with Norman Reedus.
Despite all the franchises set backs, there is a massive fan following and the games are now routed in pop culture, so much so, that fans have come up with there own theories about the games.
So here are 5 fan theories so disturbing they actually might be true.
5 – Multiple Dimension.
This is one of the more popular theories that can be found on a number of message boards, forums and blogs alike. The idea is that Silent hill is the meeting place for other dimensions or universes. An earth not unlike our own has opened up, but unlike our earth, it is like an evil twin, where one is clean and ordinary and the other is full of all manner of creatures, barb wire and evil.
In the original game, there would always be a warning sign of impending doom, usually an air raid siren, this would indicate that a portal of some sort was opening up and would swallow you into the alternative, nightmarish place, and that siren is most likely coming from that other world as you would imagine, it would be in a constant state of war.
It would go a long way to explaining all the horrors you see in the games.

4 – You are Yourself.
Another fan favourite theory is that in each of the games, the protagonist is in fact you, the person playing the games.
This one is aimed more at the PT demo, but also works well with all the other games too. The protagonist is in fact you, who is playing games, dying and solving puzzles in a repeatable and predictive pattern over and over again.
What makes this so unsettling is that PT turns this idea up on its head, and the gameplay, even though it is looped, changes ever so slightly each time, dying and coming back to life with nothing but your trusty flash light.
It is a little weird this one, but it does make some sense when you think about it. Gamers are conditioned to expect things to go a certain way, PT and other games turn that upside down and makes you wonder about what it is you are actually doing, essentially taking away the predictability out of the equation.
Kojima has done this in a previous game Metal Gear Solid, when you face down Psycho mantis, when he reads what's on your memory cards and you have to use the player 2 port in order to beat him.

3 – Project Morpheus.
This one is no longer true, but it still is a good theory non the less. The PS4 VR headset, previously project Morpheus, had been in development for years, PT and Silent Hills (before it was cancelled) was supposed to be designed specifically to turn your pants a cool shade of brown and yellow. Well the game was designed with VR in mind.
At the end of the PT Demo, there is a voice that you do hear throughout game, but he says...
I will be coming back! And I will be bringing some new toy's with me.
This has led many to believe that it was in fact to do with the then, upcoming VR headset, aka project Morpheus, and led to believe the Silent Hills game was a VR only game considering most new horror games are first person affairs.

2 – Aliens...
This is not a popular theory, but is still a good one if you take the time to think about it. There are 2 sides to this theory.
The first is down to a Swedish radio transmission that can be heard in the PT demo that says the radio drama from 75 years ago was true. A reference to Orson Welles War of the Worlds Radio drama about an alien invasion that aired 75 years ago when the demo was released (now 80 years) in 1938.
the radio goes on to say that 'they are here on earth, they monitor and see us all, and that very soon, the gates to a new dimension will open.
This is what explains about the second part of this theory. In the previous games, aliens did indeed open the gates to a new dimension and have let through all the nightmares we encounter in the game and the aliens even experiment on them as well as the protagonist in each of the games.
A little far fetched. But in all the games, there is a hidden UFO ending. So it could well be true.

1 – Northwest USA.
In the PT demo game, the voice on the radio repeats the same set of numbers every now and again, 2 0 4 8 6 3. some fans have found out that this is indeed the genome model number for the Black cotton tree that only grows in the North west of the United States.
When you look at an early promotional image of the PT Demo, the letters 'PT' can be found on a tree stump in the middle of a Forrest.
When you combine the genome model number and the promo image, it could lead to the conclusion that PT and by extensions, all the silent hill games are all based in the north west region of the united states of America. This would mean that everyone was wrong about the location of Silent hill which was presumed to be in Maine in the North East of the states.
With the Silent hill franchise being created by Kojima, and the fact he has played around with Genome and DNA plot lines in other games, this may actually turn out to be true.

Kojima has a very unique mind, and he never does anything unless it has a purpose in his games, so there may actually be some truth to these theories. Unfortunately we will never find out. After Konami and Kojima butted heads over Silent Hills, resulting in it being cancelled with most of the source material and initial programming destroyed, followed by Kojima's departure from Konami, it is unlikely that we will ever get a full explanation of anything from the Silent hill franchise out of Kojima, and Konami have also seemingly buried the franchise too.

Much love Dee
Dang, you think about the minds like Kojima's that makes these games...all those little Easter eggs teasing that this and that...and they're on purpose. That's just crazy. Love the theory about how the protagonist is actually us. Thanks for sharing :)
Your most welcome @mikesthoughts :D ,
I definitely remember playing the first Silent Hill when it came out and I still have nightmares from that game. It was one of a kind back then and is still a great game.
I have to agree , :)
I read somewhere on the internet long ago that Kojima is scared of making horror games. But for someone who's scared of doing that, he made a very long list of Silent Hill games in the series, something that I find funny to think of for some reason.
Nice post by the way, these fan theories really are disturbing.
Also, thanks a lot for mentioning me in your posts..
He is terrified he does not even watch horror movies that's why he even gets horror movie directors to work in collaboration with him and in his new game death stranding he is working with norman reedus and a few others and one being george romaro
