Hi there. In this post I share how Gamestop the games retailer is closing stores in Canada.
I could have put this in LeoFinance or in Hive Gaming but I decided to put this in my blog.
Back in late February 2025 it was announced according to Zerohedge that Gamestop was to close operations in Canada and France. CEO Ryan Cohen blames high taxes, wokeness and DEI practices and more things he does not like. The high taxes in Canada I understand as us Canadians do pay unnecessarily high taxes. The DEI stuff? I dunno. Maybe, maybe not.

The move is part of a broader strategy under Cohen’s leadership to streamline GameStop’s operations. Since assuming the role of CEO in 2023, Cohen has focused on reducing costs and enhancing long-term profitability, which includes downsizing the company’s physical store footprint.
Prior to the announcement, GameStop operated 203 stores in Canada and 647 across Europe.
This looks like downsizing to me as many stores are not profitable. I think more and more people are buying their video games online and not so much physically at retailers like Gamestop.
Gamestop Store Closing in Downtown Toronto's Eaton Centre Mall
During my visit to Toronto, I found out for myself that one of the Toronto locations is closing soon. This Gamestop at the Eaton Centre Mall in downtown Toronto is closing soon. The planned store closure is on March 15, 2025. Pictures from my Redmi Note 13 Phone.
On the red store closing note. It mentions that after March 15, 2025 you go to their other location and the Yonge & Dundas location. This location is right outside the mall lol.
For me I am not too affected by this. Only my brother plays video games and he usually buys his games online from the Nintendo console. I play mostly the Pokemon TCG and Gamestop is not my number one choice when it comes to Pokemon cards. For a big retailer Gamestop has really uncompetitive pricing compared to local card shops on Pokemon cards.
To those affected by these Gamestop closures, how does this affect you? What are some other places you go to besides Gamestop?
