I'm a Narrative Focused Guy!! and maybe an explorer~
I agree that the presentation is the most important thing in any game, the thing is... the Gameplay plays big role in the presentation more than the graphics/animation/voice acting/and so on....
A Game with a gameplay that "feel good" even if not original.... can get away with a simple Graphics.... But the Gameplay must feel good compared to the overall game experience.
Some companies add many elements to their games just because these elements are popular (Like RPG elements in a shooter game/ or many side quests that are just fetch quests that the hero doesn't have a narritive reason to do). Yes, they make the game sell more but they also make the game unfocused and they cost the company to make too. The Game can be cheaper and might even give the company more profit-to-cost value, if they only put the elements the game needs not every single popular thing to it.
I definitely agree with your bolded. Companies need to stop making games for everyone and make games targeted at a specific type of gamer. If they do this they can have a lot more franchises that are great at one or two things rather than one franchise that's average or mediocre at the many things it does.
