Will EA lose the Star Wars license through the Battlefront debacle? Allegedly, Disney looks for alternatives. In the conversation are Ubisoft and Activision.
Does Disney award the Star Wars license to another publisher?
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 unleashed the biggest controversy in the game industry last year with its Lootboxes and became the fail of the year for us. According to a rumor, Disney may now consider reassigning the Star Wars license. Ubisoft and Activision are allegedly in talks.
At least this is reported by the website Cinelinx and relies on anonymous sources. Accordingly, the information is to be regarded as a rumor, because the site can’t provide proof of authenticity. While such a move by Disney is not unlikely, one should not jump to conclusions.
So Disney is dissatisfied with the current state of the Star Wars games and would look for alternatives to EA. Therefore, one allegedly had a serious conversation with the publisher, as other media reports.

Too much damage to the brand?
Both publishers have already released games of the brand in the past. For example, Ubisoft released the episode 3 game: Revenge of the Sith. Activision was responsible for Jedi Knight. Earlier there was evidence of the intervention of Disney: The company should have ensured that the micro-transactions were temporarily removed after the great storm of criticism from Battlefront 2.
Since the lootboxes were partly regarded as gambling, here for the first time a serious danger existed, to harm the brand name Star Wars. After all, Disney is not likely to want its Star Wars to be associated with minors gambling. It is unclear, however, whether Disney can dissolve the contract with EA so premature.
No heart for Star Wars games This could be done through a clause or agreement that requires EA, for example, to publish a certain number of games or reach specific milestones. If the publisher does not comply with this, cooperation could be terminated accordingly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ At least Disney has reason to worry: EA did not seem lucky enough to be awarded the valuable Star Wars license so far. After the publisher bought it in 2013, there was a lot of criticism for the games of the brand. Starting with the first Battlefront, which was criticized for its lack of single-player campaign and few launch content.
Battlefront 2 brings them, but caused with his micro-transactions displeasure among the players. "Project Ragtag", which was under development at Visceral, was even shut down. Only the Star Wars game of the Titanfall makers of Respawn is still in development.
It is expected to appear in 2019. There are also mobile titles like Rivals. So EA has so far released only two major games with the license, both of which brought numerous problems. While the films fill huge theatrical halls and the Extended Universe revolves around comics and books, Star Wars is not in the limelight in the game world. Something Disney should not like.
Who would you give the Star Wars license and why?
